Totoro Sells 1-Millionth DVD after 440 Weeks in Japan

Miyazaki, Ghibli's film DVD has remained in Japan's weekly top 300 since 2001

Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's My Neighbor Totoro film has sold 1.001 million DVD copies in Japan as of the May 24-30 week — 440 weeks after its first release. The 1988 film first shipped in Japan on September 28, 2001. It has remained in the top 300 of Oricon's weekly DVD ranking charts ever since. By contrast, the 2-Disc Special Edition of Gore Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest has also sold one million copies in Japan, but has only ranked on the weekly charts 26 times.

Despite this record, Totoro is only the #3 top-selling Ghibli film on DVD in Japan to date. Spirited Away has sold an estimated 2.344 million copies on DVD since 2002, and Howl's Moving Castle has sold an estimated 1.216 million copies on DVD since 2005.
