Nico Nico Douga Video Site Adds 1 Millionth Subscriber

The Japanese video-streaming website Nico Nico Douga announced that its 1-millionth premium subscriber registered at about 7:50 p.m. on Wednesday. Nico Nico launched on December 31, 2006, and it added its monthly 525-yen (about US$6.45) premium service on June 18, 2007. It began deleting videos with unauthorized derivative content at the request of copyright holders in July of 2008, and it reported its first profitable quarter this past spring.
The 800,000th subscriber registered on May 17, 2010, and two and a half months later, the 900,000th subscriber registered on August 3.
Compared to the free service, the premium subscriber service offers smoother playback, higher resolution for long video uploads, and special access to live streaming events.
