Japanese Cultural Festival in London on March 5th

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Manga, anime and cosplay represented alongside Haiku and Martial Arts.

A cosplay competition, a manga drawing workshop and a class in using anime songs to learn Japanese are among the offerings at the 'Bunkasai' Japan festival in London on Saturday March 5th. The festival also offers a range of other activities, including performances of Taiko (Japanese drums) and Budo (martial arts).

The cosplay competition is to choose the entries (one individual and one group) to go to European Cosplay Gathering, a new European contest that concludes at the Japan Expo convention in Paris this July. Entrants are judged both on their costume and their performance; for details, see here. The competition is open to entrants aged 18 and over.

Bunkasai will take place in Conway Hall in Red Lion Square, near to Holborn Tube Station (see map). The event runs from 10 am to 430 pm. Tickets are £5 on the door or £3.50 in advance (children under ten are free if accompanied by an adult). However, the workshops must be booked separately; places are limited and prices vary. For example, the Manga Drawing workshop costs £12 per person. Until February 28th, you can book the workshops here.

Bunkasai is the name of an annual event in Japan, where children at nurseries, and students at schools and universities, display their work.
