TV Tokyo: Crunchyroll Has Nearly 70,000 Paid Subscribers

posted on by Egan Loo

The broadcaster TV Tokyo reported during a November 24 press conference in Tokyo that the media service Crunchyroll now has just under 70,000 paid subscribers, generating profit for TV Tokyo on this venture. Crunchyroll had in the range of 30,000 paid subscribers in the summer of 2010.

When asked to comment on TV Tokyo's statements, a Crunchyroll representative told ANN, "Today, we are generating meaningful revenue for not just TV Tokyo, but all of our valued publishers. We always welcome new publishers to use our channel to directly reach anime fans worldwide and generate significant revenue online."

Crunchyroll's representative continued, "Crunchyroll is the world's leading anime channel with millions of free viewers monthly, in addition to our large and growing number of premium subscribers. We are extremely thrilled by the support of anime fans worldwide for our service and the anime industry. The majority of viewer revenue from subscription and advertising is shared directly with the Japan anime industry, where it will fund the creation of even more anime titles.

"TV Tokyo is a strategic investor and minority shareholder in our business. While we do not confirm or deny information provided by TV Tokyo, we have already announced previously that we are profitable as a company, and that we are investing heavily to expand and improve our service."

Update: Crunchyroll's full statement added.
