News Tatsumi Film Excluded from Oscar Foreign Film Shortlist
posted on 2012-01-18 23:20 EST
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the short list of foreign-language films for the 84th Academy Awards on Wednesday, and Eric Khoo's animated adaption of Yoshihiro Tatsumi's A Drifting Life autobiographical manga did not appear. The film screened at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in May, and Singapore submitted the film for Oscar consideration last year.
The manga is based on a semi-autobiographical account of Tatsumi's struggle to make a living after World War II. A Drifting Life originally shipped in Japan in November of 2008 as a two-volume series. The manga since won two Eisner awards in 2010. Tatsumi was also nominated to enter the Eisner Hall of Fame that year, but was not selected.
The 84th Academy Awards will be held on February 26.

Review
If this film causes more permanent damage than most Pokémon outings, that's wholly the fault of its main character, Keldeo.
On the whole, The Battle for Doldrey is a mixed bag of strengths and weaknesses. While that may be true of most things, there are few places where those lines are so clearly drawn as in this film.
