posted on by Andrew Osmond
18-rated game features animation by Studio 4°C.

The game Catherine, described as an "adult & horror-esque adventure game" for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, was released in the U.K. on Friday February 10. Published by Atlus/Deep Silver, it features animation by Studio 4°C (Tekkon Kinkreet, Genius Party, Thundercats) for the game's animation. It is rated 18. The above Japanese-language trailer was streamed on youtube by the IGN Entertainment site.

The plot features a corporate employee named Vincent and a mysterious woman, Catherine, whose appearance results in recurring nightmares for Vincent, as there are reports of men dying in their sleep. The gameplay involves Vincent having to choose between Catherine and his longterm girlfriend, Katherine, as well as a series of puzzle games (representing Vincent's nightmares) involving crumbling stairways and sheep-men. There are eight possible endings.

Catherine was created by the same team that created the Persona games, which spawned the television anime Persona -trinity soul- in 2008. The game is the first high-definition release from Atlus.

According to the MCV UK website, the game's distributor Koch Media is promoting Catherine "with homepage takeovers, ads in anime publications Impact and Neo plus men's lifestyle magazines FHM, Nuts and Zoo. Koch also promoted the game with a launch event at a ‘sensual’ London venue."

In Japanese interviews, character designer Shigenori Soejima (Persona -trinity soul-) said the content is more aimed at adults, and sound composer Masashi Meguro says that the key words for the game's music including "adult" and "erotic."
