Mushi Production to Animate Film on famous 16th and 17th-century Kyoto figure

The Kyoto Shimbun newspaper reports that production has begun on the tentatively-named Yume wa Hatou wo Koete - Tenmei ni Ikita Otoko: Suminokura Ryōi (Dreams Surpass the Surging Waves - The Man Who Lived His Destiny: Suminokura Ryōi), a biographical animated film on the famous 16th and 17th-century Kyoto merchant and shipper Suminokura Ryōi and his son Suminokura Soan. In addition to his merchant activities, Suminokura is also well-known for his work constructing canals in Kyoto in order to better facilitate trade in and out of the city.

The film is currently scheduled for a release in 2014, which will coincide with the 400th anniversary of Suminokura's death. A production committee consisting of a Kyoto non-profit, as well as film production and distribution companies, was formed last September, and Mushi Productions, the studio founded by manga and anime pioneer Osamu Tezuka, will animate the series.
