Screenwriter: Live-Action Star Blazers Still in Negotiations

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie, The Wolverine), who has been attached to Skydance Productions' possible live-action film remake to Star Blazers, revealed in an interview on Sunday that the film is still in negotiations. When asked about the status of the film, McQuarrie said:

"Yes, the longest rights negotiation of planet Earth. I think we're very very close to finally… there's one last piece in the chain that needs to be worked out and when that's done I would immediately be able to start writing that."

Star Blazers is the dubbed and partly rewritten adaptation of Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto's Space Battleship Yamato space opera anime franchise. Skydance Productions had revealed that it was in talks to acquire the live-action film rights in 2011. Skydance head David Ellison (son of Oracle co-founder and CEO Larry Ellison) and Josh Klein would produce if the deal is completed.
