Inio Asano's Oyasumi Punpun Manga to End

Solanin, What a wonderful world! author launched series in 2007

The 12th volume of Inio Asano's Oyasumi Punpun manga series, which shipped in Japan on Friday, announced that the 13th volume will be the final volume. The 13th volume is scheduled to ship this winter. The series, which began in Shogakukan's Weekly Young Sunday in 2007, has been serialized in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits since the magazine's closure.

The series follows Punpun, an ordinary young boy growing up in Japan whose age of innocence reached its end after his father was arrested for spousal abuse and putting his mother in the hospital. With his uncle looking after him, Punpun grows into adulthood facing a series of events that change him, for better or worse, forcing him to contemplate just what it means to be an adult.

The manga received a Jury Recommendation at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2009.

Viz Media has published Asano's previous series Solanin and What a wonderful world!, and Fantagraphics Books will publish Asano's Nijigahara Holograph horror manga. Asano mentioned in January that it is possible that his next work will focus on transgender issues, for which he will collaborate with fellow manga creator Shohei Manabe (Ushijima the Loan Shark, Smuggler).
