Gareth Edwards' Godzilla remake pulled in US$38.5 million on Friday, the largest opening day earnings in the year so far. The movie debuted in 3,950 theaters and earned more than Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's opening day figures.

The crew began shooting in Canada early last year. The film's cast lineup includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, Bryan Cranston, Richard T. Jones, Juliette Binoche, and Sally Hawkins.
