Frozen Home Video Tops Spirited Away as Fastest to Sell 2 Million Copies in Japan

Disney film also holds record for number of copies sold on 1st day, in 1st week

Yahoo! Japan reported on Wednesday that Disney's Frozen film has sold 2,025,000 "MovieNEX" Blu-ray Disc/DVD combo sets since it shipped four weeks ago. This amount beats the previous record holder Spirited Away, which took 11 weeks to sell 2 million copies.

Frozen now also holds the records for highest number of home video units sold on the first official day of sales and in the first official week of sales in Japan. The film also already topped Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance's cumulative total of 465,000 Blu-ray Discs sold to date.

Spirited Away currently holds the record for most home video copies sold of all-time in Japan with 2,403,000, although those copies were on DVD.

As of July 19, which marked Frozen's 19th weekend at the box office in Japan, the film's box office earnings have surpassed 25 billion yen (about US$243 million). The feat marks the first time since Spirited Away 13 years ago that a film's box office earnings topped 25 billion yen in Japan. The film is now the third highest-grossing film of all time in Japan after Spirited Away and Titanic, the latter of which earned 26.2 billion yen. As of August 10, the film's 22nd weekend at the box office, the film has earned 25,324,141,942 yen (about US$246,884,300).
