New Battle Angel Alita/Gunnm Manga to Launch in October

In Kasei Senki, Gally/Alita goes to Mars to seek truth about herself

This year's 20th issue of Kodansha's Evening magazine is announcing on Tuesday that Yukito Kishiro will launch his Gunnm: Kasei Senki (Battle Angel Alita: The Martian War Chronicles) manga series in the 22nd issue on October 28. In the story, the cyborg "mechanical angel" Gally (Alita in English translation) goes to Mars to discover her roots and seek the truth about herself. (Kasei Nendaiki is the Japanese title of Ray Bradbury's famous science-fiction short story collection, The Martian Chronicles.)

Kishiro had revealed in January that he would start a new GUNNM manga series in the second half of 2014. He ended his Battle Angel Alita: Last Order (GUNNM: Last Order) manga series on January 28.

Kishiro's original Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga ran in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine from 1990 to 1995, followed by the 1995-1996 follow-up Ashen Victor and the single-volume GUNNM: Other Stories. The story continued in 2001 with the partial retelling Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, which moved to Kodansha's Evening magazine as the result of an issue between Kishiro and Shueisha's Ultra Jump magazine.

Kodansha released the 19th and final compiled volume of Battle Angel Alita: Last Order in Japan in April. Kodansha Comics began releasing the series in North America with the 16th volume in December 2012, and the 19th volume shipped this past August. Viz Media originally published the first 15 volumes in North America until Kishiro switched publishers in 2011.
