Osamu Tezuka's Final Diary Writings Inspire Film

RADWIMPS band's Yōjirō Noda plays cancer patient making final painting in Toile no Pieta

A concept in the late manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka's diary inspired Toile no Pieta (Bathroom Pieta), a feature film which will open early next summer. Yōjirō Noda, the vocalist of the rock band RADWIMPS, will star in the film as the main character Hiro Sonoda.

Just before passing away, Tezuka wrote in his diary:

I came up with a wonderful idea today! How does "Toile no Pieta" sound… A patient diagnosed with cancer thinks it is unreasonable to die without being able to do anything, so he starts to draw a picture on the ceiling of the hospital room's bathroom ... […] the Purification and the Ascension. This was the challenge to the world by the dying person!

Daishi Matsunaga (Pyuupiru documentary) wrote and directed the film, which incorporates Tezuka's fundamental theme of the "preciousness of life." Shinji Ogawa (Norwegian Wood) and Morio Amagi (Helter Skelter) are producing the film.
