Author says he has paid back taxes; tax evasion investigation concluded

Log Horizon and MAOYU light novel author Mamare Touno issued a statement on his official website on Monday in response to the reports of his tax evasion charges.

His statement reads:

To my readers and all concerned parties,

The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau notfied me about the investigation on my tax reports, and I cooperated with their investigation. I have filed and paid my back taxes and completed the necessary paperwork, and so the Bureau has concluded their investigation. I've since given this incident a great deal of thought, and will endeavor to avoid such an incident in future. I sincerely apologize for having troubled and worried my readers and all concerned parties.

Touno was previously charged with tax evasion and violation of the Corporate Tax Law for allegedly neglecting to file 120 million yen (around US$996,438) in royalties. According the prosecutor's office, Touno owed the Japanese government 30 million yen (around US$249,114) in taxes.

Touno launched his Log Horizon light novel series in March 2011, and his MAOYU light novel series in May 2011. Log Horizon inspired two TV anime series. The first season premiered in October 2013, and the second season premiered last October. Yen Press announced last August that it will publish the light novels in North America.

MAOYU also inspired a 12-episode television anime series that premiered in January 2013.
