Love Live! Film Earns 400 Million Yen in 2 Days (Updated)

The website of the media trade paper Bunka Tsūshin revealed on Monday that the Love Live! The School Idol Movie film earned 400 million yen (about US$3.24 million) on 121 screens in its first two days at the box office in Japan. The film opened in Japan on June 13.
Mainichi Shimbun's Mantan Web website additionally reported on Monday that the film sold approximately 252,000 tickets.
Our Little Sister, the live-action film adaptation of Akimi Yoshida's (Banana Fish) Umimachi Diary manga, opened on June 13 on 323 screens, and the film sold 181,642 tickets to earn 229,117,100 yen (about US$1,870,649) to rank at #2.
Love Live! The School Idol Movie will screen in theaters outside of Japan starting in August. The film will screen in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, and Indonesia.
By comparison, Gekijō-ban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica [Shinpen]: Hangyaku no Monogatari (Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion-) topped the Japanese box office in its first weekend with 400,003,600 yen (about US$4 million at the time) when it opened on 129 screens in October 2013. The film sold 271,279 tickets during its first weekend. The K-ON! anime film earned 316.31 million yen (about US$4.054 million at the time) in its first weekend when it opened in Japan in December 2011 on 137 screens. The film sold 237,800 tickets during its first weekend.
In 2010, the anime studio Sunrise, Lantis, and ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G Magazine launched Love Live! as a self-described "ultimate user-participation project" that lets its fans vote on the future of the fictional idols. A series of music CDs and animated music videos then followed. The members of the project announced in 2012 that an full anime series had been green-lit for the following year. The second season of the anime premiered in April 2014.
Crunchyroll streamed both series as they aired in Japan, and NIS America has licensed both seasons for North American release.
Update: Famitsu is reporting that the film earned 400,235,800 yen (about US$3,240,900), and that it sold 251,811 tickets.
Update 2: The animeanime.jp website posted a corrected box office total of 400,003,600 yen (about US$4 million) for Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie -Rebellion-, as opposed to the original number of 436,000,000 yen. Thanks, Ejc
