Shenmue III is also 2nd fastest Kickstarter campaign to reach US$1 million

The Guinness World Records site reported on Wednesday that the Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue III, the belated next installment in a game franchise that began in 1999, has become the fastest video game crowdfunding campaign to raise US$1 million in pledges. The campaign took 1 hour and 42 minutes to reach the US$1 million landmark, beating the previous record of 6 hours and 5 minutes set by Torment: Tides of Numenera.

The campaign has also become the second fastest Kickstarter campaign to reach US$1 million, behind the campaign for the Pebble Watch smartwatch in February, which took 46 minutes to reach that landmark.

The campaign achieved its US$2 million goal in less than nine hours after launching, and it will end on July 17 at 9:51 p.m. EDT.

The Kickstarter also added additional stretch goals on Thursday, including a skill tree system (US$3.5 million), more mini games (US$4 million), an infiltration mission (US$4.2 million), an additional quest (US$4.4 million), a battle event (US$4.6 million), and a character perspective system (US$5 million). As of press time the campaign has raised US$3,120,762.

Game creator Yū Suzuki confirmed at the PlayStation E3 press conference on Monday that he is aiming to release the game for PlayStation 4 and PC. Sega released the original Shenmue on its own Dreamcast platform in 1999, and released the Shenmue II sequel on the Dreamcast in 2001, and on the Microsoft Xbox in 2002. The series was originally planned as a trilogy.
