Lighter, energy saving CUH-1100 model will also get worldwide release

Sony Computer Entertainment announced on Monday that it is releasing the new CUH-1100 model of the PlayStation 4 home console in Japan later this month. The new version will be 10% lighter, and will consume 8% less power than the current model. The new version will come in both Jet Black and Glacier White colors, and the cost will be the same as the current model, at 39,980 yen (about US$324).

Sony noted that it also plans to release the new model worldwide in the future. The model will be priced at US$399 and 399 Euros overseas.

The unit's size will also be the same as the current model, and the hard drive will still feature 500 GB of storage. The hard drive bay cover will have a textured surface.

Additionally, Sony Europe's PlayStation Blog announced on Sunday that it will release the PS4 Ultimate Player Edition with 1 TB of storage in "select Europe and PAL territories" starting on July 15. Sony asked those interested to "check with [their] local retailer" for pricing information for the new model.

Sony had announced in March that it had sold more than 20.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide as of March 1. The company noted that the PS4 is the fastest-selling console in PlayStation hardware history.

Sony sold one million PS4 consoles in the first 24 hours since its launch in the United States and Canada in November 2013. Famitsu reported in that Sony sold 322,083 PS4 units during the console's launch weekend in Japan in February 2014.
