Seven Seas Entertainment announced on Friday that it has licensed Leiji Matsumoto's original Space Pirate Captain Harlock manga. The company will release the series in two hardcover omnibus editions under the title Captain Harlock: The Classic Collection. Zack Davisson is translating the series.
Seven Seas describes the story:
After a mysterious sphere collides with Tokyo, legends seemingly born of the ancient Mayan civilization appear. But in truth, the beings are alien invaders known as the Mazone, plant women who wandered the earth in bygone ages–and have now returned to make it theirs. With a ragtag crew of renegades at his side, only the Space Pirate Captain Harlock has what it takes to save the planet.
The classic series ran from 1977 to 1979 and inspired a 1978-1979 television anime from Toei Animation. The television anime in turn inspired Arcadia of My Youth and other anime feature films, several original video anime, and a 2013 CG film. Film World Studios is developing a live-action film based on the manga.
Seven Seas Entertainment also plans to release Matsumoto and Kōichi Shimahoshi's ongoing Captain Harlock: Dimensional Voyage (Captain Harlock: Jigen Kōkai manga beginning in October.
