2012 film adapts Kenji Miyazawa's classic novel

Sentai Filmworks announced on Tuesday that it has licensed the 2012 The Life of Budori Gusko (Guskō Budori no Denki) anime film. The film will be available digitally and a home video release will follow.

Sentai Filmworks describes the story:

Based on the 1932 fantasy novel by Kenji Miyazawa, the film is a fairy tale that follows an anthromorphic cat named Budori living in the forests of Ihatov. After a series of misfortunes, including the spiriting away of his beloved sister, Budori sets off to build a better life - but a deadly winter is coming, and Budori finds himself the unlikely hero with a plan that can save everyone.

Gisaburō Sugii directed the anime and wrote the screenplay. Shun Oguri starred in the title role. The film won an Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2012.

The original novel by Kenji Miyazawa (Night on the Galactic Railroad) also inspired a 1994 anime film.
