South Kent School Gets 'Slam Dunked'

SOUTH KENT, Conn.--The South KENT School (SKS) welcomes renowned Japanese “manga” author and artist Takehiko Inoue – author of the international best-selling book Slam Dunk -- to the school here on October 7th, 2007.

Mr. Inoue is at SKS from Oct. 7 – 11 accompanying Narito Namizato, the finalist in Mr. Inoue's Slam Dunk Scholarship competition which awards a full academic and sports scholarship to South KENT School to the top 17 – 18 year old basketball player in Japan.

The final phase of the competition is the South KENT admission interview and evaluation. Upon successful completion of this phase Narito will attend South KENT starting in the spring term of 2008.

In an interview published in 2006 Mr. Inoue said, “I ended up creating the Slam Dunk Scholarship, to promote basketball in Japan…South KENT School is ideal for a Japanese student to study English and prepare for college. If the player attracts the eyes of a scout, he might have a chance at receiving a college sports scholarship and play in the NCAA. All I can offer is an opportunity; the students need to do the rest by themselves.”

Richard Brande, South KENT Director of Admissions and Financial Aid said, “We are pleased and honored to have been selected from among all U.S. preparatory schools for the privilege of participating in this innovative international scholarship program. We believe that South KENT School offers the perfect blend of academic excellence, competitive sports programs and innovative teaching methods for boys making the crucial transition to manhood. South KENT welcomes the opportunity to provide this special educational experience to the youth of Japan. We also applaud Mr. Inoue and Shogakukan for having the vision and foresight to create the Slam Dunk scholarship program.”
