Tokyo, JP (October 12th, 2017) – Niconico, the largest social video service in Japan operated by Dwango Co., Ltd. (https://info.kadokawadwango.co.jp/english/index.html), and the anime/manga/game retailer Animate Ltd. together will host “Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival 2017” which will take place in Ikebukuro East Entrance area Tokyo, Japan during October 29th (Sat.)-30th (Sun.).

■What is Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival?

The Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival is an annual event where cosplayers dressed in their favorite anime/video game characters gather to mingle and take part in many activities held throughout the event period. During the festival, the entire town of Ikebukuro becomes its venue - cosplayers can be seen on main streets, parks and even inside stores.

The event began in 2014 with the aim to spread cosplay culture, a famous subculture which originated in Japan, throughout the world from Ikebukuro, one of the epicenters of Japanese subculture. This year marks its 4th year and the event now garners more than 10,000 cosplayers from around the world each year. In 2016, the event attracted approximately 90,000 physical visitors and 240,000 online viewers on Niconico Live Streaming making this one of the largest cosplay events in Japan. Participation is free and open to everyone – cosplayers and non-cosplaying visitors alike.

The festivity takes place at JR Ikebukuro Station East Exit Area – known as an “otaku” subculture mecca with Otome Road as its hub. This year, the event space will be expanded and include Minami Ikebukuro Park - a park with spacious green lawn for participants to enjoy cosplay photography and open food stalls for refreshment. The event will also be streamed live worldwide via Niconico Live Streaming

■Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival - Event Highlights

●Niconico Cospllection (Oct.28th & Oct.29th - 11:00~17:00)
Niconico Cospllection which will be held at the main stage in Higashi Ikebukuro Chuo Park showcases a plethora of cosplay related activities which include cosplay fashion shows, cosplay stage performances, cosplay karaoke stage and cosplay arm-wrestling tournaments. Cosplayers selected by the lottery will get a chance to walk the runway and show their cosplay in front of a large audience. Stage guests include cosplayer Miya, Kuroneko, Eiji and Kuroko Kiki.

●Cosplay Parade (Oct.28th 13:00-14:00)
For the first time ever, the festival will hold a cosplay parade. Lead by the Rikkyo University Marching Band, approximately 250 cosplayers chosen from the lottery will march across Sunshine Street to Sunshine 60 Street which is known to be the busiest street in the area. Viewing is free of charge, however participation requires a prior application.

●Hatsune Miku 10th Anniversary Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Gathering
In this special collaboration project, participants cosplaying as vocaloid virtual diva Hatsune Miku or Kagamine Rin/Len will all gather in one photo area to celebrate Miku's 10th year anniversary. Anybody cosplaying as a Vocaloid character can take part in this gathering – no prior reservation/application required. More details to be announced at a later date.

●Cosplay Photography Session (Oct.28th & Oct.29th - 11:00~17:00)
Cosplay photography session will be held with cosplayer Iori Moe, Yuriko Tiger, LOPE, Momotsuki Nashiko and Miyamoto Saki as guests. Visitors can get a hands-on experience on cosplay photography with their own camera/smart phone or with a rented high-end DSLR camera (Camera: EOS 5D Mark IV / Lens: EF24-70mm F2.8 L II USM) provided by Canon Marketing Japan Inc.

●Cosplay Videography Gathering (Oct.29th - 11:00~17:00)
Cosplayers can have their pictures and videos taken professionally by the cosplay videographer Rescue the Princess at Naka Ikebukuro Park. Photos and videos will be uploaded to the official website at a later date.

●Themed Cosplay Gathering (Oct.28th & Oct.29th - 11:00~17:00)
In this program, cosplayers matching a certain “theme” will all gather at Naka Ikebukuro Park to network and take photos.

●Cosplay Photography Area (Oct.28th & Oct.29th - 11:00~17:00)
Dedicated photo spots will be placed in photogenic locations in the venue This year, an elevated platform will be placed in certain areas broadening the range of expression in cosplay photography.

●Cosplay Prop Area (Oct.28th & Oct.29th - 11:00~17:00)
This area offers handmade cosplay props crafted by skilled modelers from around Japan. Visitors can pose and take photos with memorable weapons and items from anime/manga/game. Located at Naka Ikebukuro Park.

●Cosplay Repair Dock (Oct.28th & Oct.29th - 11:00~17:00)
Cosplay Repair Dock offers cosplay outfit repair service by veteran cosplayers and seamstress. Located at Naka Ikebukuro Park.
