Why nipples should be censored? I mean, putting a star on them would make look the girls of I´s like strippers.
Are nipples that evil that we have to censor them. What kind of lame weirdo can get horny by watching a topless girl in a manga?I ve seen female breaths all my life, there is nothing special about them. A kid wouldn´t become a dirty pervert by seen a nipple. The people in the US is really inmature.
If the manga goes for a mature audience, then instead of censor the manga, put a strip on it that indicates that the material is for adults or people over 18.

Viz might be "scared", but DC? They are just obviously trying to cash in on the Shonen Jump action manga crowd of younger teenagers.
Honestly, I miss the old Viz, sure they were slow with their releases and took their time, but damnit...they were fearless!
The domestic manga publisher without fear!

Presupposing that Viz is filled with fanatical Christians, of course. Oh wait, they're based out of San Francisco, the de facto capital of the Socialist Republic of California, by far one of the most - if not the most - liberal state in the Union. Fanatical indeed...
|
Um, California elected Arnie, voted to deny illegal immigrants health care and an education(although that was overturned), got rid of affirmative action(for non-whites), and was one of the first to define marriage between a man and a woman. Of course, maybe if the majority of us actually voted instead of smoking pot all day, we'd still be considered a blue state.
Izlude:

It's not that they never had a problem, since they were censoring even in their early years. It's just now they've got some corporate fascists running the company.

I also know what reproduction organs look like, and yet, if I buy pronography in Japan I get it censored. Why don't they just leave it alone? |
Laws we imposed?
Quote: | Now, you could say sell it at a 17+ rating. Here is the problem with this: retail. Most retail shops [I am talking about Walmarts, Best Buys, etc.] will most likely not carry the title [there have been exceptions] due to the nature of it being 17+. It used to be that sales in specialty shops [like comic shops] were enough to justify a release, but with the changing economy, large chains have become your profitable venue. Therefore, you do the best you can to ensure that all outfits will stock your product |
Of course, with a-holes like Wal Mart, even if you sell censored content, they'll still force you to cut the price at a level that's clearly unprofitable for the publisher.
On a side note, I agree with Chris Beveridge's rants on the subject, but I feel his discussion of his wife's breast milk falls under the category of TMI. Anyway, I figured Viz was going to hell when most of the talent such as Carl Horn was jumping ship.

Now the editing, I can see where Viz might stand in regards to I"s. They've done their best to market their Jump line to a young audience and if a young boy picks it up, despite the 'Advanced' label, they'd be surprised(and Ultimate Muscle, while bearing the Advanced label is hardly any different from regular Jump stock). But stars? What are they trying to make I"s look like? Cheap porno covers? This is where the edits that were made to Tenjo Tenge would have made better sense. Dear lord, an added bra would've worked fine or just plastic wrap it and be done. Wasn't this what was done to Video Girl Ai(by the same author nonetheless) when Viz released it?
As far as the Yami no Matsuei editing... I know the scene, but it doesn't really make sense why on earth they'd edit it. For crying out loud, Yami no Matsuei reeks of homosexual subtext. Editing out something like that does what when they get to volumes where Muraki bemoans loosing his arms, because gosh-darnnit, now he can't molest Tszuki? This is even more silly when this is from the same company whose shoujo line includes Mayu Shinjo's smut.

Now I may be missing something, and I haven't seen the manga myself, but I just wanted to ask a question and hopefully contribute a bit to the conversation.
From the AnimeOnDVD article:

Some early review copies that got out contained something quite bothersome. In scenes where the characters are naked for whatever reasons, stars have been placed over their nipples.
|
Have actual retail copies been seen with boobiestars, or are we still talking about "early review" copies? In the latter case, does this necessarily mean that retail copies will have starrynipples?
I digress, I don't really know how the industry works, but the way the whole thing read to me when I first saw it the other day was like this whole hoo-haw was over prerelease editions sent out to reviewers, not necessarily the finished product. If I am incorrect and this IS the final product, please enlighten me and then proceed to disregard this post.
But, if not, is it possible that the "review copies" have stars over nipples either because they were sent out for free to reviewers who may not necessarily desire to see naked breasts, or because real edits like the suggested drawn-on bras were not completed yet?
It just doesn't seem to fit to me that they'd put the time and effort in to completely draw a character out of a panel in one manga and then slap on tacky pasties instead of a proper garment to censor another.
If that's the case, they need a good kick in the pants.

Yes, it has been confirmed by Viz (and scanned by somebody who has gotten the first volume already at a retailer) that the stars are, in fact, there.

I don't know, I laughed at the Yami no Matsuei censoring. Pre-release I was a little scared that it would be in plastic wrap and poor little underage me would not be able to purchase. But, truthfully, the editing out of Fujisawa's head didn't make me annoyed or angry and it didn't ruin the story. If that needed to happen to keep it in the Older Teen section with the rest of the series, sorry, Fujisawa, but your head and hand are going.
Though it makes me terribly curious as to what they will do with volume 11. Anyone else read that?
And on the subject of boobs... I generally shrug. Though putting stars in front of nipples does seem a little western-style pornographic. I do have some complaints about VIZ manga-dub, but they are non-censorship-relating.

When I read about this, I was thinking that Viz may do something like since Viz is known to young teenagers and older ones and some of the parents in the US are really strict about and may throw a big fit about that.
