Public libraries cater to all ages. As a consequence, they have books, movies, magazines (and manga) that are perfectly appropriate for teens to adults, but very inappropriate for young children. But libraries can't enact mandatory age restrictions on their collections, so any patron can check out any item.
When your child brings something home from the library that you consider inappropriate, you need to address why the kid picked this out, and if they are interested in the subject matter then that means it's time to discuss it with them. "If they're old enough to wonder about it, then they're old enough to be told about it."
I'd have to fault the news reporting here and this alleged "problem solver" reporter who didn't appear to do any research. Whole thing smells of a slow news day at the TV station plus a chance for a cheap, fast, senational story: "Is Your Library Corrupting Your Kids?" Film at 11." (^_*)

This is disapointing, since manga is atleast getting a BOOK in kids hands..ya know...something you READ.
Just like the catholic schools were against Harry Potter....c'mon, there's worst things that youth can get their hands on.

That's what I'm talking about. It wouldn't have bothered me as much if it was a well written, well reported story. But it wasn't. If you'er in the journalism business, one has a responsibility to be unbiased and tell all sides of the story. I know, I know, news media are slightly biased be it on TV or newspaper. But at least try to cover all your bases >.< These people didn't even try. >.<

This is just a chain of events someone says something about one thing and oh just so they wont be left out of all the bashing of things that could harm our children they attack what ever they can. So let me get this straight the "Mother" is now telling everyone to drop the manga and burn it. Sorry but i like reading and umm well i could say a lot more but i won't just for the sake of my well being.

Yeah, points taken:
-Parents should pay more attention to their kids
-This content will appear wherever people are
-The more something is popular, the more hated it is
But negative thoughts on this:
-stuff for younger people are becoming immoral
--have you seen "Bratz"? My little cousin wants that stuff...those girls look like prostitUtes!!
--and even those Disney movies! They've got a bunch of hidden stuff in them

Too true. Its like "take a look around" manga bad? look at some of the stuff that you can find in your local mall. A rating is out on a book for a reason so the mother shouldnt get mad at the manga get mad at the library.

lol... reminds me of a "headline" last week on either the local nbc or fox: "X-BOX X-POSED!" -people hacking the game console to watch illegal movies" (umm there's an incomplete conquest of IRAQ, major law suits against corporations (Sony, Merc, Scandisk to name a few), and this crap is deemed news worthy? God, I hate "slow news days".
I saw Orange county and assumed (because the ANN brief made no clarification ) Orange County, California. As a result, I was severly disapointed when I clicked the link and found out it was somewhere in florida...
Anyway the same thing would have gotten news attention here in CA (and has in past btw) since orange county florida/california are both strongholds of close-minded white middle/upper class repulican christain zealots.
But anyway, the manga/library are not at fault (heck you can check out pornography at most libraries- so I hear). I place the blame fully on the incompetence of the library staff.
Of course, the article tries to depict (in a typical xenophobic
right-wing bias) the horrors of this "japanese" manga, but given the origin of the article, that's to be expected.

How? How could her having read that girls can get raped whilst on dates, at that age, ever saved her from the retarded pervert who assaulted her? By being so afraid to go outside her home that she becomes a paranoid self shut-in, never going on dates later on, never socialising, and condemning her life to lonelyness in need of therapy? Life is never that black and white. You're not taking into consideration that most young children up until their teens take mostly all things literally because that is the way their brains are wired. Sex education is not about how to get it on with your girl, or boyfriend next chance you get. It's about learning just what it is, the events involved, and the consequences thereafter. It is taught in a supervised environment not in the park with the lights off. Questions are answered in a considerate way for the mental apptitude of the age of 10 when sex education begins in the UK. It's like I said, until one become a parent themselves, one will never understand why a child of 11 shouldn't be reading such things without supervision.

Obviously, those decent, educated citizens who were offended by the diabolical manga were right! I can't believe that any reasonable person wouldn't be horrified to learn about how some sick perverts have shown a pure child a filthy book like Peach Girl.
It's not just manga, though. I've heard that many churches are now using some sort of sick text that has stories about a man named Lot who got drunk and had sex with his daughters and some old weirdo, Moses I think, who exposed himself to his sons. Disgusting! Pornography like that should be banned. It's unchristian!
In some schools they even have students read filthy trash about two 14 yr. olds who disobey their parents, run away, and illegally get married. Romeo and something. I forget. There's another one (Hamlet?) about some kid who murders (!!!) his mother and uncle after having an hallucination (probably drug induced) about his dead father. It just sickens me that we're corrupting our kids like this! Now its nasty rubbish like Peach Girl. Even the name makes me think dirty thoughts! Have you ever seen the shape of a peach?
Well, actually...
Come on people, give your kids some credit. Some of them aren't morons. It's pretty sad if they can't handle Shakespeare, the Bible, the Brothers Grimm, and well, 90 percent of the world's literature. Manga isn't any different. I guess if the child has severe mental problems, he/she shouldn't be exposed to Peach Girl, but otherwise...

You forget that in Shakespeare's plays, it was normal for people to get married at 14.

No. The point is that it describes behaviour that is condemned now. It's easy to see people condemning a manga (or movie, book, etc.) because it describes 14 yr old characters having sex. If they don't apply that standard to other works, then they're being inconsistent. If they do, then I'll just point out the narrow-minded absurdity of their views.

That's because most of them would die before they were 5, and very few of the rest lived past 50.

So you read all those books when you were 11 then? Sure the Bible has some very ruanchy, and gory stories in it. But your average 11-year-old, even your average 14-year-old wouldn't comprehend their meaning and significance without a learned academic explaining it to them. There are passages in the Bible that I myself are only now understanding and I'm 53. I don't condemn Peach Girl for what it is, (which on investigation seems to have a subtle hint of being racist as well, and may have contributed to the outcry of that 11-year-olds' parents seeing as they are a little bit "tanned" .) I condemn anyone under the age of 12 reading it, as does the publisher and rightly so.

Well, I'm glad that Alabama made a good move by banning Thompson's practice in their state. I wish where he is also licenced practicing they ban him too.
As for that story making it to the news, it was a local news channel website. Where in my impression, local news always gotta play crap. All the big stories like the War on Terror, lawsuits, bird flu, that is what internet sites and cable news stations and newspapers are for . Leave the crap news to local news.
I'm not surprised what makes the challenged book list. Reading books like the Crucible was really enjoying since it reflects a situation like this with "witch hunts."
Well, I would like to say that this isn't the first time we'll see an attack on manga (anyone remember the Dragon Ball comic at Toys R Us that showed Bulma's ass?), nor will it be the last. Considering the nature of anime and manga, I believe the attacks on it whether from conservative or liberal parents, or democrat or republican politicians will always find a way to attack or ban anime and video games.
