[quote="AchtungAffen"]I'm somehow not that happy about capital punishment, even for the freakest ones like this guy. Even less happy to know Japan, supposedly such a civilized society, still has capital punishment. [quote]

So you're okay with this man ritualisticly killing himself. You're okay with this professed child rapist and killer living on the government's dime. However, you're against helping the families of the victims acquire closure and the justice system setting an example by finally putting this man to death? He is worse than some highway robber. He robbed 4 families of their children, at least 4 girls of their lives, and several more of their innocence. It's taken 16 years for the justice system to finally lay the virdict. This individual represents the worst of hedonistic society and should be removed - not left to rot like some benign mold, but cut off like the festering boil he is. The only compassion I can find for this man is hope that his drop from the gallows will be a high one, although there'd be a bit of cosmic justice in him kicking the air for a good hour and suffering like his victims. But really, if it bothers you so much, think of it as seppuku that the Japanese government is helping with; they're twisting the blade for him so to speak. |

Speaking of justice for girls who were raped and murdered, when are the Japanese going to do something for the families of comfort women? Not that I don't believe the guy's innocent, but execution
is generally used as a double standard more than a universal standard. I mean John Gotti's probably whacked more people than Tookie, but because he's rich, he could plea-bargain his way out. |

He could spend the rest of his life on death row knowing that one way, or another, he's only going out in a body bag.

I think you mean BTK... Anyways, I'm glad they're sending this sick freak to an early grave. AchtungAffen, either you don't realize the severity of this man's actions or you're just plain loony. Sentencing serial murderers and rapists is not supposed to be "civilized," it's about delivering justice. Somebody who repeatedly commits crimes like this is not mentally unstable - they are evil. They don't deserve to be treated in a civil manner, and they should be put down like animals - which is what they've essentially become. They're subhuman creatures. They didn't show any mercy to their victims - and they deserve none themselves. Lethal injection is too good for this freak - they should hang him, or worse. Either you don't realize the severity of this man's actions [removed -t] This man should be punished in a manner befitting a serial killer. That means he should die. A third option: Your name leads me to believe that you could be a member of the National Socialist party - that would certainly explain your sympathizing with mass murderers! No. Many European countries don't. Plus Canada has not had the death penalty since the 1960's. |

No, keeping him in the looney bin isn't enough. If he is aware of what he did then he deserves the death penalty. Especially for killing little kids, I have no pity or for empathy people who kill or abuse kids.

I know that some of the tapes in his possession were those of the Guinea Pig video horror/gore series. They caught a bad rep after the incident much in the same way otaku did. (Personally, I'm more concerned about the reasons a rapist/murderer would be drawn to those kinds of titles than just to porn.) |

What? No. Tsutomu Miyazaki is on death row. That has nothing to do with the Tsutomu in the encyclopedia. His name is linked to the news article just because he happens to be named "Tsutomu." If you check the other articles he links to on his encyclopedia page he has nothing to do with those, either. |

The last 8 or so years, have been the appeal process. The Guy was sentenced in 1997. In the USA, death row prisoners often have 10 years or more of appeals, in pretty much the same manner as this guy. PS, the UK doen't have the Death Sentence, though I think the law should be changed for serial paedophiles. JBV |

I'm sure there are death penalty opponents in Japan too, just like everywhere else. There are multiple theories that support the death penalty as there are theories as to why it is bad. I am in favor of it personally, there are some crimes for which the ultimate punishment must be used, this is one of those crimes.
Actually all countries have the death penalty, even the "civilized" Euros. It just depends when it can be used. For example, in Europe and Canada and the UK, the death penalty is reserved for treason during time of war . The death penalty is an emotional topic that everyone has an opinion on, and opinions, as this forum thread amply demonstrates, run high. Just want to encourage everyone to show some respect for people with differing views and to remind people that because someone disagrees with you does not make them automatically "stupid" etc. |

Actually, the US and Japan are the only two post-industrialized/First World countries that have capital punishment still for non-war related crimes (ie, non-treasonous). As far as Miyazaki Tsutomu is concerned, he is clearly unstabe and cannot function within society. I'm glad he's getting the death penalty. As for the death penalty, I don't think we go far enough. I think that capital murder, serial murder, and sex crimes should all be communicated to death penalty. The US should bring back hangings, and we should make them public again. |
