Ok this is way off topic now, but do you have any more info on this?? I LOVE WWII propaganda cartoons, and Der Fuher's Face is an excellent, excellent cartoon....I'd love to own a clear copy of this film!

I saw someone mention this somewhere within the past week, possibly on Ain't It Cool News; it was an aside in some article I read, probably about Lilo and Stitch. I'll have a poke around various places and see if I can get more info.

UPDATE: Couldn't find anything like that mentioned on Disney's 2002 DVD schedule, so I sent them an enquiry. I hope I haven't been taken in by a filthy, stinking rumour.

UPDATE II: Oh yeah, I did spell it "Fuehrer" (they way they spelt it in the cartoon) when I searched BTW, since I forgot the first "e" when I spelt it earlier.

Shinji: "I LOVE WWII propaganda cartoons"

I dunno about Der Feurer's Face, but I heard Cartoon Network was supposed to show some old WB propaganda films.

what's wrong with bootlegs? I'd rather watch a subtitled bootleg then wait god-knows-how-long for Buena Vista to release an edited, dubbed version

To begin with, you have this common problem:
http://www.animeondvd.com/specials/articles/cn001.htm (granted, the article is about a Gundam flick, but it happen quite frequently with bootlegs)
I'd rather wait to have something that is good animation quality than a crappy bootleg.

About the studio ghibli boxset. It might not be a bootleg as I have seen a ghibli box set on an import site

This one has been proven to be a bootleg Wink And to quote from AnswerMan: "Basically, pay attention to trends in anime, what's been licensed, what the Japanese import cover looks like, who's selling it and what the title is. If you know this stuff, you'll have an easy time spotting a bootleg. ANYTHING that hasn't been licensed or isn't out yet in the states that shows up on "DVD" (Usually a VCD) on Ebay or Amazon Auctions is a bootleg and will look and sound terrible. There are a few DVDs encoded by legit companies as all-region discs but these are few and far between." Wink

I'm not. It just shows Disney's running ideas by introducing the same characters that made them successful. Sure, they "make fun" of those characters, but it's really just PR for kids to buy more dvd's and merchandise for those older films. That and when they premiered Lilo and Stitch in my area(Hollywood), the whole area was blocked for three days. I have no love for Herr Eisner.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think any of the self-parodying footage Disney used for the Lilo And Stitch teasers are actually going to be used IN the movie.
Confused

I was actually getting pretty excited about perhaps going to see Lilo And Stitch for just that reason. But just last week, my sister and a close friend of mine informed me on two seperate occasions that the movie itself is just about Stitch and Lilo's adventures in Hawaii, and doesn't have any cameos like the ones shown in the commercials.

Are they wrong, or have you guys been fooled too?

Anime Digital's Pirate Anime FAQ gives at least four great reasons why spending money on bootlegs is a bad idea.
http://www.digital.anime.org.uk/piratefaq.html#whynot

1) They are illegal in almost every part of the world except Taiwan, and government officials can confiscate and/or destroy them if they find them in your possession.

2) Bootlegging operations are sometimes used to launder money made from selling drugs and pornography, prostitution, and other forms of organized crime.

3) Bootlegs can be very low quality and wear out very quickly, because bootleggers don't have to meet any quality standards.

4) When you buy bootlegs, you are shafting the people who actually make the animes you buy. They don't get anything back for sharing their hard work with you, and that gives them less money to spend on new anime series.

If you haven't read that Pirate Anime FAQ yet, I highly recommend doing so. There's a lot that can be learned from it if you aren't familiar with the bootleg market.

I think we went over the "what's wrong with bootlegs" argument before.

At any rate, no, it can't be cut (by Disney) -- the contract between disney and ghibli says so:

Will Disney modify (i.e. cut scenes from) these films?

No. This will not happen. Disney can not cut even one second from the films, according to the contract. Ghibli has officially stated that "With Disney's commitment to maintain the quality of the original titles, there will be no changes to music and sequences in foreign language versions."

(Quoting from Nausicaa.net www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/disney/)

Additionally, the time of waiting for Ghibli releases is pretty much at an end -- Disney was waiting for the Japanese DVD releases (to prevent reverse importing, which apparently does make an impact over there, although it makes no difference here).

IIRC, two or three Ghibli DVDs are slated to be out in the US by the end of this year (or was that early next year?).. it was big news a few weeks ago, when they just mysteriouisly showed up on Disney's website.

I think, after Mononoke, they will automagically include the Japanese audio (additionally, why else would they wait for the Japanese releases? While it's true a no-Japanese audio release would still be reverse-imported, the amount of r-i would be significantly less.. 6 years of cursory english does not a proficent speaker make.)

"there will be no changes to music and sequences in foreign language versions."

(*cough* Kiki and Laputa *cough* Didn't the music get changed in the dubs for both titles? Yes, Laputa's music was re-composed by Hisaishi himself, but I heard some negative comments about it.)

"Additionally, the time of waiting for Ghibli releases is pretty much at an end -- Disney was waiting for the Japanese DVD releases (to prevent reverse importing, which apparently does make an impact over there, although it makes no difference here). "

BS. The Yamadas, Kiki, Totoro, and Porco Rosso were out on region 2 MONTHS-some of them years-ago! I don't see why it took Disney two years after the region 2 dvd's came out to release Ghibli films, other than the fact that they just decided to sit on them.

And while we're at it, Laputa was supposed to be in theaters 3 years ago! Mononoke itself was supposed to come out in the summer of '99, but Disney pushed it to the fall and promoted Happy Texas instead. I really find it hard to believe they'll advertise and give adequate theatrical or home video distribution to any Ghibli film. (Add to the fact that they've done nothing but butcher and give dub-only dvd's of other Asian films like Shaolin Soccer.)

Anyway, while I won't endorse bootlegs of Ghibli films,(They hurt Ghibli as well as Eisner; otherwise I'd be all for it.)I'm fine with bootlegging Disney's home-brewed animation, seeing as they treat their own animators like cattle, ready to be fired because some executives at the top pitched costly and unsuccessful movie ideas. (*cough* Pearl Harbor and Atlantis *cough*)

Aah... so it was just a rumour I read somewhere... sorry for the false alarm guys (but at least Disney now knows I would be interested in such a release... I wonder how many e-mails they get on the subject?).

Steve,

Thank you for your email.

We have not received any information concerning such a release.

I think I read a comment somewhere that Disney was going to release a DVD
collection of World War II cartoons, including the Oscar-winning Der
Fuehrer's Face, by this fall, though I can't find anything like that
mentioned on the release schedule. Is this true, or just a rumour?
