Exciting stuff! Super sad they don't have Romi Park voicing Rainbow Dash. I hope MLP is a massive success over there, because I work as the colorist on IDW's official MLP comic and it would be amazing having a comic published in Japan. (provided realistically I don't know how often US comics make it over there)

The only people who are going to care are those small furry conventions like Fur-st, like the guys who do porn of Pokemon and Sonic characters, so I doubt that. Furryism is pretty niche in Japan compared to America, but it's about the only like of western animation that gets any kind of attention out of Japan, so they're not going to abandon the furry aspect of it.

Puchiko/Celty is doing Twilight? And Kyubey is doing Fluttershy? Huh. Casting against type, huh? This should be interesting. I kinda assumed Nana Mizuki would be picked to play Applejack and Minami Takayama be Rainbow Dash. Boo. Oh well. Let's see if these people can bring the ponies to Japan and do them justice. I'd love it if someone were to put the Japanese episodes up on YouTube or something.

Yeah, right?
Avatar: The Last Airbender didn't do so well in Japan, due to airing on a channel (Nick Japan) that isn't in many households. I think if it aired on some other channel (despite it being a Nick production), it might've become super big since I know there are some Japanese Avatar fans out there. (Plus, get the full anime treatment of having a Japanese OP sung by some famous singer.)

I was hoping for Mamiko Noto as Fluttershy, but having the other of my "top two favorite seiyuu" voicing Twilight is fine too! And now that I think about it, Miyuki Sawashiro fits Twi perfectly.

Also, the Japanese dub for Avatar: TLA was totally weak. Luckily, Bushiroad seems to be doing a proper job with this.

Just because something airs on a more popular channel doesn't mean it would do better. Totally Spies, Phineas and Ferb, and other shows aired on TV Tokyo but weren't exactly hits.

MLP may prove to have appeal though. It's not too different than most magical girl series in content or tone, just with ponies and without henshin, or they could go the whole slice-of-life moe with ponies route. Either way, if they handle this right, it could be a big success.

I'm amazed that the Japanese are making such a big deal about "My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic." While I hope it's successful in Japan,I still wonder how the Japanese feel about American attempts to mimic their style. I've enjoyed the series and I hope the Japanese enjoy it. It's hard to know who the Japanese will feel about it.

I've read some translated chat logs of a fansubbed stream and there was some comparison to pet monster shows, but without the human master component. I was also surprised that a few of the Japanese fans recognized the American voice actors. I did a little digging and found that even though there are fansubs of American shows, they aren't as necessary seeing as how everyone has to take a english language course in school.

What was wrong with its dub? Were all the Seiyuus unknowns? |
Yes. With the sole exception of Aang's VA (and that VA only voiced a MINOR character in Pani Poni Dash) the rest of the cast as virtually unknown.
Oddly enough, the live-action movie's dub has a better cast.

MLP's theme song has been iconic for decades. All they had to do was make a Japanese version of it. Like they did with Sailor Moon's "Moonlight Destiny" all over the world in different languages.

That's actually misleading. Despite having to take English classes for years, Japan is one of the lowest scoring in Asia with English language global standard exams. That's why they prefer dubs too.

Language tests usually involve reading, listening, writing and speaking. People usually fail on last two last "active" parts from many reasons- they are the most difficult by definition and twice as hard for those whose native languages have completely different phonetic. For Japanese we must add that's hard to practise them on your own and asking teacher for advice is usually discouraged in Japan. Also, Japan is very homogeneous when it comes into language, while in many places in Asia English have an established tradition of serving as lingua franca for citizen of countries where every region have unique language. (So we have English-speaking Animax Asia)
Passive knowledge of the language is easier to train and don't need tutoring. I've started to read and watch in English, German and Spanish years before I started to vocalise my thoughts and learned reading in Latin just from books in my free time. MLP has also a very simple vocabulary and quite entertaining plot, so it fits for a first choice for English show.
