I just think everyone should know that this doesn't have a confirmed airing date yet.
It might indeed be this summer! Let's not go crazy and get all ahead of ourselves here tho k

But, see.
"Remaking" would imply that it had been made already.

Free! is not a shojo or shoujo, though. Its a show aimed at the female otaku. |
If the target demographic is female(even if they're otaku), it's shojo

Well Free! isn't a josei, that's for sure.

The target audience is females 15-23, which falls mostly under the Shoujo demographic, it is definitely shoujo(demographic, not genre, because shoujo is not a genre)

I have to wonder where people are assuming this show is shojo or josei. It seems more in line with shonen or seinen, like KyoAni's previous works. Just because it features bishounen guys does not make it aimed at women. Kuroko no Basket and Hetalia are other examples of shonen/seinen series that are popular with women.

That's the problem with demographic labels as opposed to genre labels. Free! can in no way be considered shounen or seinen since it was unambiguously targeted towards females. (Yes, guys like myself can and did enjoy it but we were not the main audience.) And yet, Free! clearly followed the shounen sports formula. So calling it a shoujo show, whilst technically correct, feels really wrong, because it doesn't resemble most shoujo shows out there.
Tl;dr: Free! is a shoujo show, but calling it that is really stupid, even if technically correct.

Oh dear no, I wasn't saying that.
I was just stating my belief that a quibble over which manga demographic applies to an anime series is a very silly quibble indeed.

It's clearly aimed at females but at the same time it is no way a shoujo or a josei. I think it's a mix of shounen and shoujo.

How about we just take these sexist terms and push them somewhere else?
It's a sports anime.
That's it.
These gender labels have always been really, really dumb.

Exactly. Dividing all anime up into four quarters based on supposed age and gender demographics is ridiculous.
