Whew, that was a long post.

But it has been read, acknowledged, and greatly appreciated. Thank you. =3

Very interesting you say that, though, as (Black) was probably the first time in the entire franchise I truly cared about Hanekawa as a character. I got a TON more depth out of her, whereas she was a far more confusing and incomplete character in Bake. It still wasn't the full glimpse of her character, but we found out a ton more about the feelings under her mask, and Araragi was central in dragging that out. I mean, sure, the conflict wasn't solved completely and was doomed to repeat itself, but there's significant meaning in it being a temporary solution here, too. That is, her entire situation was unfixable in her current state, and would just come back to haunt her later. Hence why (White) was such a big deal, since the solution there was more embracing of her stress than not, acknowledging the futility, but allowing her to grow anyway.

But thank you. Your view on the subject is no less interesting, and even if I disagree, I'm more interested in figuring out what makes people like you think like that when watching the one part of the series that makes me feel the opposite. There's gotta be something there (or maybe missing). Anime hyper

I have to agree that in a series of not-quite-real characters, Hanekawa feels like one of the least real of the bunch - I want to like her (and the end of White took some huge steps in that direction), but I thought that Senjougahara's takedown of her at the start of White was almost uncannily spot-on.

OTOH, one thing she has going for her - she seems to pull out some of the series' best animation work. The Nekomonogatari Black opening is probably my favorite of the series, and her 'letter to herself' at the end of White marks my single favorite bit of animation through the whole run. Black on the whole isn't quite as standout as White (or her arc in Bakemonogatari), but it's still a fine piece of work.

Sorry if it's a bit off topic but buying Aniplex stuff is quiet a pain in the ass since they are only working with Right Stuf, which is not really convenient for international buyers. Can someone recommend of a good site the ships worldwide Aniplex of America stuff?

not sure if this is supposed to be an open secret or what, but they will ship it to you. unless you're in Japan.

AoA domestic releases are restricted to U.S. and Canada. Used to be worldwide except Japan, but the policy changed after the first Madoka Magica TV volume shipped. Fortunately I already pre-ordered all three volumes, so I was grandfathered in.

Indeed her 'perfect' character felt unrealistic on the surface, but as the review says she's really just a girl, going through a usual unrequited love story in her Bakemonogatari (though, as the story remarked that unrequited love might not be as simple) and a rather unusual family problem.
I personally think that, regardless her too perfect depiction on her perfection, her 'kindness' or well at least, politeness to others, her sticking to rules, the diligent and smart student nature, are pretty much ordinary characters of many teenagers these days, and thus realistic.
Though at the same time it can be one reason for not being interesting enough to be as likeable as other girls with stand out uniqueness (Senjougahara with her sharp tongue and supposedly-most-of-the-time honest or Kanbaru who easily speaks out every foolish thing in her mind). Not until Nekomonogatari (White) at least.
(while in this case Nadeko can be a more unlikeable character, I think).

Anyway.

I wonder why Hanekawa looks more special in overall of this series (at least until the anime adaptation so far).

spoiler[Senjougahara sure is declared as the main love interest and got her love story scenes (the stargazing story).
However, in many stories Araragi keeps mentioning Hanekawa, comparing some girls to Hanekawa, thinking what Hanekawa would think of something he had in mind, etc. And in second season Ougi also admittedly refer to her as being an important character. Not to mention that she got three stories, four if she had important role in Kizu though I can't confirm. And in regard to Kizu, isn't she then chronologically the first girl to be Araragi's harem and the so called Araragi's life savior? ]

Maybe it's not because of Araragi, rather NisiOisiN seems to especially favor her?

Hanekawa's character design in the anime is rather fat, I think, especially spoiler[ before she cut her hair ]. But I believe she looks beautiful in Vofan's illustration. I wonder if she's supposed to be more a likeable character.

Not every anime character has to look like a 12 year-old or a starving supermodel. Hanakawa is not fat at all. Unless you are only talking about the chest-region... which is certainly not unintentional.

I am a huge -monogatari fan, and even absolutely loved Nisemonogatari (Sure, more could have been accomplished, but I thought it filled it's time just fine. Then again I have no issue with the Hobbit movies either. When you think about it there is no set amount of time that a movie or show should accomplish things, and I thought it kept fresh enough to not have to be any faster).

The one reason I haven't picked this up yet is the price. At the end of the day this is still a $50 set for just a single ova, practically a movie. A few postcards won't change that. In the last sets the "deluxe" booklet was essentially just a pamphlet, not much more substantial than what you get in cd cases. I will at some point, I'm far too big of a fan of the series to not, but after I am more well set.

Also a random note, but I hope the box is slightly better constructed. The last ones weren't bad by any stretch, but they weren't quite funimation-chipboard level. They're a little soft, and can show some marks.
