Speaking of Media Blasters, they were going to release the Riki-Oh anime on DVD, but that's still a VHS-only affair in Japan.

If you haven't heard this live version, drop by Youtube for this performance of Michiyuki, ending theme of Loveless, music and lyrics by Yuki Kajiura, vocals by Kaori Hikita: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylLoZoUL6lE |

Actually, both parts were also released on LaserDisc in Japan, and the fansubs out there are also sourced from those LDs. Too bad the official release was cancelled... The live-action movie was picked up by Netflix a few years back, so those in US can at least enjoy that version of it. |

Yes, the Netflix print looks very nice. Media Blasters was going to release it on Blu-ray, and I'm guessing that's where Netflix's print comes from...but noooooooo.

I doubt that they would release it now given that they are on life support to still exist. I am waiting for their Ladies vs. Butlers dub (but why use a studio that is noted for its anime porn dubs?). |

Not just hentai, the studio also dubbed Loveless. And while I never heard the Loveless dub, it has to be better than the "professional" ones done for Kanokon and the new one on Kashimashi which were on the south side of bad. The redubbing question as well as the "dub or not to dub" part is more prominent in Sentai's case; They're not just redubbing shows from four or five years ago, they've now rereleasing shows from the previous year as well as the same year. It would seem to me that they found an "undiscovered" market or maybe a new income source. Or they're just going "D'Oh!" a lot...
A handful? You must very large hands ... with lots of fingers. Both Maria Holics, Mayo Chiki, SA, both Clannads, Sunday Without God, Nyankoi, Maid Sama, Chuunbiyo... I feel I'm forgetting two. Princess Resurrection and... Give me some more time. But even before that, why dub Shining Bread or Little Girl Who's Kind of Italian and the Men Who May Love Her over Love Snafu or {Chuunbiyo got a redo even before being done, Sunday Without God... oh} Down With Humanity? They just have very poor planning... or coin tosses. Tears to Tiara. That's it. Needless. Uh, wait, that's not one. Oh right, they're part of the "We'll do a dub when we do a complete collection" list and doesn't count. Yeah? |

On the Media Blasters side, I know good ol' Dokuro-chan wound up getting a dub after its initial sub-only release. I kept on waffling on that until it finally went OOP on RightStuf and now goes for some loltastic amount on Amazon, but I couldn't really bring myself to actually own it.

Sundays Without God was simulcast as streamed subbed by Sentai, but it never had a subonly physical release. The half sets of Needless were dubbed in English from the get go. Also, when Shining Hearts was dubbed, Sentai was dubbing nearly everything they released. I'm guessing it was just an experiment to how much of their output they could dub profitably. |

Ah, correct on points. What was I thinking of? "Ghost Hound"? No, it was something I liked... And in regards to Shining Bread {I saw the first episode, there's no "hearts", just bread} being dubbed, it wasn't at the point they were dubbing everything. They started sub only then played catch up but at no point have they ever released everything with dual languages. The conjecture was that other distribution companies footed some of the bill for an English dub .. which could also account for the new dubs. It also allows for some new buzz for new complete collection; When the sub only shows get collections, I go back and buy the cheap as dirt half sets. Sentai's "due to popular opinion" response in regards to Chuunbiyo's sub only and dubbed release being offered in the same year flies in the face of everything, from streaming numbers, to past experiences, to popular opinion and to this Week's Answerman. "Wait, a Kyoto Animation show has fans?!" Blue Drop, another one I forgot. MM!, that was the one I was missing from my first list. I even bought that one too. In Sentai's case, dubbed rereleases are so not rare, it's hard to keep track of them. |

I felt fans were a little harsh about how bad they thought the Loveless dub was. (Though it was a little rough at first IMHO.) There was also the assumption that since the voice actors did work in anime porn they're not true or proficient actors which, I think some of the cast may have been offended by. Personally the sound mixing caught my attention more than anything. But, I agree that for some reason Media Blasters has some releases with memorably bad dubs. I think there was one I wouldn't listen to even though it had a V.A. who had worked in television as well.
I hadn't. Thanks. |

Well, in Chuunibyou's case at least they announced a Blu-Ray as well as DVD, then pulled the Blu-Ray listing to add a dub (but went ahead and released the DVD) once the show ended up being a bigger hit with US audiences than presumably they originally expected. I expect that in the future most home video releases will either have a dub or go the premium box set release, in order to have enough extra over streaming to be worth the purchase for a large audience. I say this despite being the kind of anime idiot who still shells out for overpriced sub-only DVD-only cut down releases of Silver Spoon and Servant x Service just because I like the shows. Just like a Japanese fan. Also, nice shoutout by Justin to Combustible Campus Guardress, a show that never got released in the US. Rumor was always that the company with the license was difficult to work with; otherwise it always seemed like a title that would have fit right in with other OVA releases from that error. |
