I think the premise has potential and I've read some good things about the series. I'm expecting likely a 1-cour show but also with a lot of focus on the characters. Music seems to be a part of the series' story as well so I hope the studio and director can make this right. The preview's music is pretty catchy Last edited by Stark700 on Sat Sep 03, 2016 8:26 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I play euphonium in my high school band, so, naturally, I'm somewhat intrigued. It's hardly an instrument people recognize often (Google Chrome's spell check says it's not a word), so it's somewhat refreshing. The director also made Haruhi Suzumiya, a show I recently got into, and the studio has some prestige, so it already has that going for it. I'm anticipating this one.

Episode 1:
Quite interesting actually. spoiler[It has good production qualities thanks to Kyoto Animation and a cast with potentials. I'm curious a bit more about Kumiko and Kousaka and their past though.] And also, spoiler[Sapphire is a cutie. She, Kumiko and Katou has a good chemistry so far. Now I wonder how far they will take the music theme to. I bet there will be competitions later? And also, there seems to be a guy in this series as well. Hmm, interesting.] |

Definitely watching this one. Official Yamaha sponsorship confirmed!
spoiler[The way the band students act remind me of how it was in an American High School band. Always have the goofballs and the serious ones. Plus they played "Orpheus in the Underworld" for their Junior High competition! I played that in high school select band so much nostalgia there.] I am looking forward to see how Kumiko reconciles with Reina. Also the euphonium is my favorite brass instrument with trumpet (which I am currently attempting to learn) a close second. |

Episode 1
That was simply fantastic. I'm going to try and not draw any comparisons with K-ON but so far I'm getting the same great vibe. With all of Kyoto Animation's work, visually it looks stunning. The scene with the cherry/ plum blossoms was wonderful. All of the characters are already loveable, from spoiler[Sapphire and Hazuki's ditziness to Asuka's comedy act.] I don't say this often about a characters appearance but I absolutely adore Kumiko's hair. Really looking forward to next week! |

Hm, I might prefer Kumiko with the ponytail...
I don't have an ear for music so I have no idea how terrible the band supposedly is. But it's good to see that reflected in the show by only having those experienced in music pick up on it. My brother is musically talented and there have been many occasions where I think something sounds good but he'll go off about how much is sucks. Looks promising so far. I hope that, at the bare minimum, it keeps the gender role balance at Free's level. |

I could see this one edging out Plastic Memories as my favorite show of the season as it develops. Either way, it's gonna be a close race for these two. Excellent first episode. High hopes for this series.

As a band musician for 10+ years I can say that the band is actually not that bad. I've heard WAY worse live before (but that is in America). Japanese bands are normally way more dedicated and better than the average American high school band so I guess in this context they do "suck". My high school's band was nationally acclaimed (well back in the '90s) and we got our butts kicked when a Japanese band came down for a home-stay. I find it interesting that it takes place in Kyoto as I knew a girl in my section from there.

Episode 1
Okay. I saw that this was music and thought that it was unlikely that I would get interested in it, I really was not a big fan in general of Your Lie in April, with the music. But I decided that I would give it a go, maybe there was a chance there was some way they could hook me, unlikely, but still possible. A little bit in and I am thinking: Actually I remember music anime I liked, K-ON, this main girl kind of looks like a character from that. Actually this looks like something by Kyoto Animation. This is Kyoto Animation! I come back to the site and check that it is indeed done by them. After watching the episode I am most definitely in. My thoughts on the episode is that I really like the heroine, Kumiko. Her reason for joining the school remind of another favourite anime main character, Kyon, I am pretty sure I remember his reason being something spoiler[as trivial as the uniform]. And then we get her partially cynical inner monologue and spoiler[accidentally talking out loud], she is like a female version of Kyon. It is not like she is following any grand wishes, it looked like she was choosing to avoid band if she had to face situations like her bandmate's tears of disappointment, and she chooses to go back in because she has friends. Actually I would say that she feels like her own character, and that she is not outright moe makes me interested to see more. And the music. Honestly I was a little surprised that if the music was meant to be bad that it was not obviously horrible to anyone who has no idea. I did actually kind of pick that it was not that melodic, I often don't care that much about music so I was just going to go along with what seemed to be the crowed liking it. But with Kumiko's opinion, maybe one can think a little more critically for something more amateur. One of my complaints in general on anime with music is that it has a really had time portraying an amateur, anime is often so set on making something pleasant that they can't be not perfect. Actually portraying the struggle of being musically amateur can be hard, and it was something I quite liked about Locodol a few seasons back. If this show can properly go on the line between sounding too perfect and cartoony bad, I am even more interested. |

Stumbled upon this show by chance, and the brass-band angle got me hooked. The first episode was really nice, slow-moving and intriguing, But the fantastic prologue/flashback is what got me excited in further watching this show and hoping for great things to come.
I agree that it will be the quality of the music and the way it will be played and presented which will probably be a decisive factor with me, meaning that I might quit the show even if I like other aspects of it, if the musical parts aren't treated carefully (although the initial performance of the high school band already suggests that my worries might be unfounded ). |

If I had to say two most prominent things while watching it would be:
The story and music is surprisingly much better and prominent than thought. On the other hand, the girls just soulless and they feel much emptier than expected and not cute despite their design. So far the exact opposite of K-On. Actually seems like a show for story fanatics instead of character otaku. |

KyoAni has once again weaved their magic and cast me under their spell. I think I'm going to enjoy this. I could have lived without the standard, "I'm not going to join this club, okay, I guess I will" plot, though. Oh well, there is lots of stuff to distract me from the shopworn situation.

Well, if it comes down to a decision between this and Show by Rock.......... This, probably. This was sort-of pleasant, so it might be a good, relaxing watch.

At least they got it out of the way quickly. Hopefully they'll do the same with the tension between Kumiko and Reina. |

Unless Japan has invented carbon-fiber tubas with a micro-thin brass coating, I expect to see Hazuki struggling with the weight of her soon-to-be-chosen instrument for.... basically the entire series. (I never expected it to be a rotary valve, either)
Former baritone player here, and I don't think I ever regretted the choice myself. Never had to worry about chair tryouts because it was almost always just me unless the different concert bands were combined for the Christmas Concert; a nice sound which was just as easily paired with the woodwinds as well as the brass, depending on the music; the occasional meaty solo if you had something by Holst, Sousa, or R. Vaughn Williams. After watching this anime I had to browse YouTube for some euph vids for a trip down memory lane, and this guy has beautiful tone... |
