When I watch the classic musicals on the alternate-language DVD tracks, they never dub the songs, for obvious reason.
(Like, the reason Viz stopped dubbing the Ranma OP songs.)

That said, Hirahira does a surprisingly on-pitch Juile, which is not easy even for an English voice to do. Shocked

I hope I'll be forgiven for saying this but I can't imagine listening to "The Sound of Music" in Japanese. Probably because I'm not Japanese. It's hard for me to comprehend listening to that famous scene of Julie Andrews singing "The Hills Are Alive" in Japanese. It's hard of me to imagine it.

I've loved Ayaka Hirahara's work since at least 2005! She sounds really great in such an iconic role! Congrats to her!

That's true, and German is often used in anime.

Well, *I* for one love hearing about this sort of thing. Even if I most likely will never hear this dub in its entirety, there's something amusing about associating silly anime characters with those of a sacred cow of American cinema (Haha! Leisl is Mio from K-On!)

I do have to admit it is pretty funny seeing the voices dubbed in Japanese. Gotta love The Sound of Music.

Lackluster American dub quality can't be compared to Japanese dub superiority... is what I think.

I usually enjoy Japanese dubs as opposed to American dubs. I wonder why?

Japan is used to dubbing foreign films; America tend not to dub films (they remake 'em instead).

Although there are also some missteps, like this fiasco a couple years ago:

"Japanese 'Avengers' fans up in arms over shoddy voice acting on Blu-ray release"

Not sure what happened but the singer's name is Ayaka Hirahara and was spelled incorrectly in the article.
