For me that is the only real criterion.
I consider this to be by far the most significant comment in the review. It seems to me that if you can ignore the controversy about the casting, which I always have, and refrain from making comparisons with the anime and manga, which I am capable of doing, then you can enjoy watching this movie. That is good enough for me. I am looking forward to seeing it someday. Thank you for the review. |

I'm reminded of thow the director of the upcoming Fullmetal Alchemist movie, Fumihiko Sori, says he "wants to create a...film that uses techniques that challenge Hollywood," and noted that nowadays Japanese filmmaking techniques have progressed greatly. I wish Fumihiko-san good luck - if his methods (and a Japan-level movie budget) can beat Rupert Sanders' eye for slick visuals, cutting-edge VFX tech and specialists, and the skills of the good people of Weta Workshop New Zealand (who also created the robo-geisha), then he'll be truly be a cinematic legend. |

100% agree! Once again i find myself looking on the mirror and thinking "what the hell do you expect from a Hollywood adaptation of a manga/anime. I give it a shot, and if i didn’t read the manga and watched the anime i would find it a entertaining popcorn movie. And it is just that, a popcorn movie without the deep meaning of the anime/manga. If you looking for a entertaining movie to go if you don't have anything to do, go and watch. If you are a anime/manga fan and looking for a good adaptation, forget it. |

I was never going to see this I am just too invested in the original Manga and Anime to give this movie a fair hearing. now having this iteration compared to a Marshmallow I kind of feel justified in not seeing it. Oh well I hope it does not completely bomb at the box office.

Can't agree with this statement at all unless you add to it "and are so anal about the adaptation being accurate that you can't tolerate any deviation." I am a big fan of the franchise (seen all of the animated content, rated Stand Alone Complex's second season as one of the best of the 2000s, read at least some of the manga) and generally liked it. |

Sounds like one of those films you watch once and forget it existed.

I will probably watch the movie tomorrow. Ultimately, the movie sounds as expected but to give it some due, it does not look like it defecated all over the franchise as previous adaptations have done. Reading these reviews, they sound a lot like those for Doctor Strange (which was perfectly adequate). Lowering our expectations for Hollywood to 'meh, it was fine' are a topic for a seperate day though.
I hope the movie does well, we may get a more adventurous sequel. |

Some deviation is no problem to me. I've watch many live action adaptations that have some deviation, but the essence of the story is there. But most off the things that make "Ghost in the Shell" a great story is missing here. The visuals are there, but the story is lacking. Is like having a Ferrari with a Lawn mower engine. |

RT score says otherwise. It's one thing to have a dumbed down adaptation, but I have seen this plot when it was called Robocop. And Robocop was a much better film. |

Hardly, it is very much going to be in the same category as David Lynch's Dune. Which was a movie that strayed from the source material had good acting and an ok script but will be remembered for having outstanding visuals. If you a fan of 1980's cyberpunk then you will probably like it, if you do not it will hold little appeal to you. I love 1980's cyberpunk and would give the film a B. |

I saw it last night, here's my first thoughts.
The plot felt so hollow. Evil corporation doing evil corporationy things. It never makes the audience question a damn thing it was nothing more than a vehicle for the special effects. Speaking of effects they were mostly good but there a few parts where it felt like they ran out of budget. I thought Aramaki was good, Batou was good, and what little there was of Togusa was good. But I did not like Johansen's portrayal of the Major. She was not the confident, strong Major I know. She often seemed unsure and without direction. And what direction was she given exactly anyway? I imagine someone telling her "you're a human brain in a robotic body". confused look "I'm a robot" "close enough" There were parts where I swear she actually moved like she thought she was a robot. All in all it was generic but watchable for the masses but probably won't pull big money. It's not good but it's not "Dragon Ball: Evolution" bad either. It's a step in the right direction and maybe someday we'll get a good anime adaptation. What made the anime wasn't so much the fight scenes but the way it questioned if there is a difference between a human soul and sentient A.I. if there even is one. It's inspiration from Bladerunner was obvious but it still did it's own thing. Calling it a dumbed down Robocop is actually pretty accurate story wise. It actually crossed my mind a few times while watching. |

That's the general consensus going around. It's only notable in that it's caused a lot of controversy and it has a twist that gets more uncomfortable the more you think about it. |

I love cyberpunk and would give it a C. It had the aesthetic down but the plot was so thread bare. |

And it gets worse...
This is absolutely brutal. I hope they racked in those pre-sales. |

Absolutely beautifully said. I couldn't agree with you more. I hope this film fares well and it can be seen as an entry into the franchise without it being a "failed adaptation." |
