So, it's America's fault that the Japanese word for female genitalia is considered one of the worst profanities in the language, that a woman was arrested for making art based off her own genitals (what happened to Rokudanishiko was more absurd than her art, which she notes in her book), and that porn is often censored...
Japan is not nearly as sex positive as you think it is, certainly not for women. One of the academic theories behind the popularity of BL and yaoi amoungst women in Japan is that female sexuality is so taboo, women are expected to be so chaste, that women see sexual representations of female characters in straight porn as too *explicit*. Men are "allowed" to be erotic, so reading about two men having sex, and associating with them, is "safer." That"s definitely not an attitude Japan adopted from America or the West. Context is important. Topless women on the beach during the summer is a socially accepted thing (if you don't live in some third world hole). Have topless women walking in tanga in the middle of a city and they get arrested. What's socially acceptable in one setting isn't necessarily acceptable in another setting. And this is true for all societies. The Japanese are no different in this from the Europeans or the Americans. |

In 1985 there was french political satire program that aired in prime time right before the 8 o'clock evening news. It ended every single time with a gorgeous women dancing and posing erotically almost completely naked (she wore only a string). The Japanese are tame by comparison, and the Americans are to put it bluntly hyper puritans. |

This spread is neither surprising nor out of context for SJ. It has a decade-long history of showing sexual harassment (mainly on women) for (almost exclusively male) entertainment, and it's a prevalent thing in the industry. Remember the seven sins trailer? Prominently featured the main character groping the unconscious female lead, for laughs.
The real problem here isn't nudity, or even porn, both of which are just fine as long as they're not depicting illegal acts such as rape or pedophilia, but the underlying mindset that women's bodies' sole purpose is to entertain male eyes, or even male hands. Female characters with minds and wills of their own and more value to them than tits and ass are far too rare. Misogyny is deeply seated in Japan, but it also is in the rest of the world. (Ahem Hollywood movies.) This is but another symptom of it. So to clarify once again, nudity is not the problem, sexism is. (Also the boobs look hilarious) -- (And as it has been pointed out re: the topless male characters - false equivalence, since they're shown as strong, powerful, and cool, not as pure sex objects. They completely lack sexualization. Try putting male characters in the *exact* poses the ladies are. Looks weird huh? For more hilarity, check the Hawkeye Initiative.) |
