It sure does.
It takes a different kind of bravery that very few have, to be able to face your own death like that, knowing there's nothing you can do. Especially at such a young age. I don't think I could do it.
And yet, he left this world holding his head high. This is something that even non-fans should read, just that little quote, because I for one find it inspirational beyond words.

WAIT, SATOSHI KON IS DEAD???
He was never my favorite of anime's arthouse directors, but my god, that's a terrible loss to anime and Japan in general. May he rest in peace, and I hope he at last discovered the lucid dreams that so fascinated him for his entire career.

Here's just one line from the farewell note, to help dispell some speculations.
Quote: | When I opened up to Mr. Maruyama [of Madhouse] about my concerns regarding Yume miru kikai, he replied: "It will be fine. Don't worry, we'll do whatever it takes." |

I'm crying right now. I just don't know what to say. The man was a genius, gave us so much. His farewell message is very touching. As someone who has watched a loved one suffer with cancer, I can only hope that his passing was painless and peaceful. I wish the best for his wife and other loved ones.

His message was very touching. He will surely be missed. He made a huge impact on anime and his work won't be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

I cried again after reading this post. He's truly one of my favorite directors and I wish this was all a big joke.

I am very saddened (like everyone else here) by Kon's early death - some of my favourite films were from this amazing director. The cinematic world lost a genius.

It just wasn't his time to go. My heart goes out to Kon's family member and his wife and the people working with him at Madhouse.

Wow, that post from Kon sent shivers down my spine. Absolutely sucks he had to go that way. Our hearts go out to his family.

Mrs. Kon-
In the unlikely event that you ever read this, I know that this is not what you or most of your compatriots are used to hearing in your circumstances, but it is traditional in my culture:
המקום ינחם אתכם בתוך שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים
And in katakana, as best as I could render it:
ハマッコム・イェナッヘム・エットヘム・ベトッホゥ・シャアー・アヴェレイ・ツィヨン・ヴィイェルシャライィム。

I want a hug...someone.
I don't think I could get through Paranoid Agent that well, and Perfect Blue gets props for being scary. I guess Kon is known to directing shows with unique animation and freaky ascestics (sp?_.
