Well, as it is well known, otaku just means you're a fanatic about something. Be it trains, MMORPGs, pro-wrestling, whatever.

I do think it's funny that anime BD/DVD sales didn't even make the chart. Must still not be big enough. A niche within a niche within otaku interests.

They make a lot less money on porn than I expected.

I don't think this kind of survey with such a wide meaning and age range mean much anyway. I guess it's good if you're after a distant and general view of Japan's culture.

25.5% answered yes to the following question: "Do you think that you are an 'otaku' or have you been called an 'otaku' by other people?" That is an increase of 5.1% from last year.

For one thing, I think this goes to show that the term "otaku" is not exactly the pejorative people think it is in Japan. It might have been 10+ years ago but certainly not now at least not without context (you can casually or even affectionately call someone an otaku ... which is totally different from say, "kuso otaku-me")

Anyways, here's the research from 2009:
animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-10-14/yano-research-reports-on-japan-2009-10-otaku-market
It's interesting how in both 2010 and 2009, it's:
1) Online Games 2) Doujinshi 3) Adult Videos ...

and a different study from 2007:
animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-12-18/report-2007-japanese-otaku-market-is-187-billion-yen
which likewise showed Games with the most market share by far, and figures and doujinshi nearly the same back then

I don't think you should treat that chart as an all inclusive list. They simply didn't cover BD/DVD sales of anime for this particular project.

I think 'nerd' is a better term for any casual fan but whatever floats a fan's boat!

I think Japanese fans would be more incline to use Japanese word to describe their level of fandom, which leads us right back to the new article that 1 out of 4 Japanese say they are otaku of something.

Sorry, I was referring to American (or English speaking) fans who called themselves 'otaku'. It would be easier if they called themselves 'nerds' rather than say 'otaku' which, some Japanese people may consider, an 'obsessed fan of something'.

I guess to be more specific, an 'anime/manga/video game/gadget/etc nerd', would possibly be a more respectful term for non-Japanese fans of anime and/or J-pop culture to call themselves. I apologize for the confusion. Embarassed

Why does Japan love dating sims so much? They're not games!

If I wanted a game, I'd play Team Fortress 2, The Elder Scrolls, Unreal, Mario, Halo, Zelda, Sonic (Only the old games), Diablo, Xenosaga, or Call of Duty. Those actually have GAMEPLAY, which is what makes them games. Dating sims don't have that element.

An next thing you know you are going to tell me that choose your own adventure books aren't a game, and neither is Encyclopedia Brown?! That means I wasn't a 1337 gamer when riding on long car trips as a child.

Many of the old, old games were just multiple choices of what you want to do. Laughing

Just the difference is instead of treasure chests, girls are prizes to be won.

But why the hell do Japanese nerds go for dating sims in the first place? Are they that fucked-up that they can't get real girls?

Or it could have nothing to do with whether or not they can get laid in real life. There is still the story aspect of the "game" to be considered, where one can become involved in a drama without the actual complications that would arise in real-life. Many H-games involve hours of gameplay, the sex sometimes being quite limited, or not arising until after several hours of plot and character development.

Do you think women who enjoy romance manga or novels like Twilight are so fucked up they can't get real men?

Clicking through menus isn't gameplay any more than a bunch of guys making left turns for 500 laps is a sport. And if I wanted sex in my games, that's what mods are for, such as the Hot Coffee mod in GTA: San Andreas or the Sexlivion mod for Oblivion. Well, that and 4chan, seeing as how rule 34 applies to anything and everything.
