Quick question actually, does anyone know if Taiwanese television has a ratings symbol that appears in the corner like a lot of our shows do? If it does, then the mom definitely should have had ample ability to cut this off before she was offended and her child 'tainted'.

I hope this doesn't give School Rumble a bad name, its not like its a bad show, it's just not a kids show. maybe this will teach them that not all cartoons are meant for children!

I don't want to go onto a huge rant on it since it's a little off topic, but that is the mentality that has always bugged me. Not your whole statement, just the bolded part that I agree with you on - I've never liked this 'animation is just for kids' thing. Even if it's aimed at kids and is a clean show, where does it say that the toon has to be just for kids? I know tons of adults who love Spongebob (myself definitely NOT included though). We've been breaking that stereotype for years in a way, with the 'adult' animation shows like King of the Hill, Family Guy, etc. - but now it seems like the vast majority thinks animation is either 'for kids' or 'for adults because of gross out humor'. That's a small step-up from the just for kids syndrome...I guess...but still not how these things really need to be treated.

I remember that scene... you guys don't?

Actually when I first started reading the article I thought the scene in question was the scene where Harima is naked while looking for his bathing suit when Eri walks in. (Butt shot)

But I remember the scene this article is talking about. Don't you guys remember Ganji Nishimoto? He had an entire porn collection that he was giving away. When the various students stopped by to choose one, they popped a disk in and watched a scene.

I think there would be less problems with children worldwide if they all had to watch School Rumble as a part of mandatory education.

The child is only tainted by its awful parent.

How about simply not letting your five year old watch the program?

Wonder what the Taiwanese Kids TV station rating was for School Rumble? Silly TV station, anime is not for little kids! Twisted Evil
(It probably shouldn't had been there in the first place.)

Solving the "issue" instead of dragging it on in hopes of more attention, obviously wasn't done because it's not as fun as receiving your fifteen minutes of "fame."

To think though, all she had to do is shut off the tv and that is all that needed to be done, is quite frankly, simple.

I'd never thought I'd ever have to say this, but not every anime show is designed for the same target audience. Shocking I suppose to some people, but if every anime was meant for all ages, then I sincerely doubt there would be much of a industry left. No creativity means no viewers as once you see one form of something, it's less than likely to have a giant amount of change the other times you see that genre.

What exactly was this woman trying to accomplish though? There likely is a rating system with Taiwan shows and there is probably a disclaimer before the show as well (maybe not, I am not sure).

For all of you up in arms about how could this be. Simply remember at no point does this say what timeslot this was airing in Taiwan, nor what rating it was given. Episodes of the show do receive a mature rating even in the US. So if it was shown during a children's timeslot there is a legitimate complaint.

Irrespective of amusing comments like 'tainted my child' Razz

Given the station is called 'Momo Kids TV' I definitely think this was inappropriately aired. Not the show itself, most of it is fine, but certainly there are a couple of episodes that shouldn't be on a children's television station. Usually one expects the TV station to actually view all of what they are broadcasting though.

I hardly think she did it for fame. She simply wrote a standard complaint to the station, it was actioned, station was fined. That is hardly 'dragging it on', it is standard process. As the article states there were 'dozens of parents' who filed complaints. Not just the one making the silly remark, but it was hers that was picked up on for obvious reasons.

Was there a season I missed? Do they have some special edition, cause I watched the thing, but apparently THEY have the good episodes.

Here is the video played at the press conference (you can hear shutter / mirror reflex sound of cameras). WARNING: Don't click it if you 1) don't want spoiler 2) are under 5. Wink

Correct.

I guess it's all about the context; the Taiwanese mom only saw the scene (probably the one screenshot that's linked in the original article) without knowing the history of the anime and what type of show School Rumble actually is: one of the funniest comedy anime in the last 10 years if you ask me.

According to Apple Daily (they've got their own 3D animation studio and have turned Steve Jobs into Darth Vader during iPhone4's "Antennagate," remember?), that soccer mom heard the TV with high school boys discussing porno video, including some suggestive dialogue. She felt embarrassed when her 5-year-old daughter asked "what are they watching, mommy?"

Yes there is: a green traffic light equivalent to G, blue traffic light equivalent to PG, yellow traffic light equivalent to PG-13, red traffic light equivalent to X (only available on adult channels); Taiwan doesn't really have a "Mature" rating, thus M movies on TV channels (HBO, Cinemax, Star Movies, etc.) have M scenes and dialogues cut off.

However, I've seen Discovery and National Geographic Channel showing "All programs of this channel are G-rated; no further rating mark will be displayed" at o'clocks, despite of some program are still "viewers' discretion advised." I've never watched Momo Kids TV long enough to see if they have a similar statement. Right now they are airing Dr. Slump with no traffic light rating mark. If Momo TV has such claim then the claim of this soccer mom is justified, despite being overreactive, as School Rumble should be rated for at least PG.

This would bring out another problem: unlike video games, print material and home video (anime included) don't have multiple ratings other than the big red line of adult / non-adult. Therefore, my Queen's Blade, Yosuga no Sora, School Days are "adults only" (quite unthinkable in Japan or USA), while F/sn UBW and Ladies versus Butlers! are...... not rated at all. Rolling Eyes You don't want to show the latter two to 5-year-olds, do you? However, Momo TV staff might have no idea, unless s/he is into anime him/herself.

All I can say is that committee members of NCC are VERY lousy. They don't become one of the most hated government agency for no reason.

To be honest: I don't know.

Well, she chose to call / email Apple Daily, Taiwan's #1 newspaper and (in)famous for their paparazzi style, with 24/365 hotline. Can't blame people loving this paper, as the hotline provided a last resort when the legal system is defunct and/or corrupted. One of my former colleague sought their help after the employer tried to hush-hush a sexual harassment case.

Why is a 5 year old up at 9PM? I was put to bed sometime around 7PM when I was that young.

Just watched that scene again, probably the most hilarious beach scene in any anime show I've watched in years. Truly, that was some funny stuff right there, hard to mimic gold like that.

Kusanagi-Sama: At that age, I think my bed time was 6:30 or something around that time. This was a very long time ago (good seventeen or so years) so maybe schools start later in Taiwan?

So I think it's fair to say, it's easily been a long time for the both of us, obviously more so with you Kusanagi-sama it appears. No offense though.

Awesome, thanks. This is a slippery slope and each person's reactions are different.
