| Hello I am recently new to this sight as being brought onto it by friends who recommended this site to me beause I was looking for new information on animes in general. I would say this is more of a introductory statement than a qustion to be discussed type thing. So I apologize ahead of time for any informalities in this. During the past 2 weeks I have watched in my opinion so far 2 of the best animes ever created until I watch others that rival it of coarse. These two would be Clannad and Steins Gate. What I have to say for these is WOW these animes are beautifully done I would have never thought it possible that a anime could put me on such a emotional rollercoaster has these two have its honestly almost overwhelming. From the build up of characters to along with the suspense build up has well and also the tear jerking, and jaw dropping twists that left me hoping for good news for a character to edge of my seat suspense waiting for what to happen next and praying that the build ups will last and not fall into saddness. I was honestly mind blown by these animes. I may be inexperienced when it comes to anime coming from only about 6 months ago only knowing what I like to call the "big 4 " in anime ( I say big 4 cause these are the ones most likely known by majority of people.) Pokemon , Yu-Gi-Oh, Dragon Ball Z, and Naruto. To rapidly expanding my anime view list to now include things like clannad steins gate, prince of tennis, chrono crusade, kuroko no basket, and others I'll try not to bore you with the details. But anyways I guess the main reason why I wanted to post this thread is to share my growing feelings towards anime and how much it has shocked me to see what anime can do to my emotions, and cannot wait to see what the future of anime holds for me ! ( Along with increasing my anime list as well ) Anyways thank you for those of you who took the time to read this. Anyone who would like to reply feel free and I will respond as soon as I am able to ! | ||||

| Welcome to the ANN forums.
It's good to hear you're so enthused about the medium, as you seem to have a genuine appreciation for its presentation and effectiveness in art, storytelling, etc. These forums can take some getting used, but I like to think ANN is one of the best hubs of information you can find once you figure out all the tools of the trade and how to find/ask for the right things. As a newbie to these forums, I suggest you use a lot of the sticky threads posted at the top of the Anime forum. The Introductions thread might be nice to give other users some useful or relevant information about yourself if you plan on getting to know the community. There's also the ANN Series Discussion Index in case you wanna' find discussion threads for a particular series. And finally, if you haven't done so already, please give Teh Rules a quick read-over (at least take notice of the first 8) and the 3 little quirky guidelines stickied up in the ANN Feedback forum. Other than that, I hope you find the site to be a beacon of anime and manga information that can help to expand your knowledge and enthusiasm even more. Good luck. |

| josh94086, one correction: in anime world, it's actually "The Big 3", those being Naruto, Bleach and One Piece (to quickly summarise them - ninja, samurai and pirates mixed with some fantasy). I wouldn't really recommend them, though.
Anyway, welcome to the forums. Always glad to see more people getting interested in anime. |

That all depends on who you ask and is by no means set in stone. When I think "Big 3" for anime, I generally think Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Evangelion, those being three of the most influential anime out there (I have, sadly enough, only actually seen Akira ... I think). Anyway, josh94086, welcome to the forums! One thing you may want to do in the future is try to avoid having your posts be all one long paragraph, as I am unable to actually read your entire post because it's just this huge wall of text. |

| What marie-antoinette said is true."Big 3"in anime are different for different people. But,what Ignatz said isn't completely wrong. One Piece,Bleach,Naruto are considered "Big 3"due to their popularity, not the overall quality that their respective anime have.
Btw i am also new here so any help regarding this whole Website would be welcome and i would be grateful. |

If we go by popularity they are no way as popular and recognisable as Pokemon or Dragon Ball, deal with that. |

I agree Pokemon probably alone could match and probably beat the three others in total merchandising sales and is by far recognized by more people than all of the three put together. if you want to create a top 3 list OF ANIME you need to take into consideration other things than current popularity or personal preference. total impact,longevity,popularity/recognition of,quality of genre and timeliness,innovation...etc... personal preference really shouldn't be part of the criteria when making this type of top 3 I'd add Ghost in the Shell to my top 3 but not to the big top 3 because ones I'm less partial to make the grade. |

| I think the problem here is trying to limit the list of super well-known and popular animes to only a few.
The first six mentioned in the thread are all extremely well-known. |

| @josh94086 welcome to the site. Clannad was one of my first anime's as well. Elfen Lied was my first that got me watching others but Clannad made a huge difference. It was one of those shows that brings to light anime isn't all about Dragon Ball or Pokemon. (no offense to the fans, it is just I would say the average American would view those shows for kids and "not socially acceptable for grownups to watch." Personally I could care less.)
As far the other discussion on what the "Big 3" is I'd have to put Dragon Ball and Pokemon on there just because they are the ones that non-anime people probably now. When the Ghost in the Shell movie came out that might have been able to make the list but not anymore. Now the actually "Big 3" of anime for people who watch or starting to watch would probably include title Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, etc....basically what people would consider "classis" or a "must watch" but not necessarily the best anime ever made. |

The anime ended, yes, but as a matter of popularity I would like to point out that Rukia came out 8th in that recent poll of "Best Anime Heroine in 50 years" made by the NHK. It was a silly poll, and mora a popularity contest than anything else, proved by the Idolm@ster taking 1st place, which means Rukia/Bleach are still pretty popular out there (might as well mention that no girl from Naruto or OP even made it to the top ten) |

| CrowLia, I am very impressed that you were able to take the poll and find some actual use for it! | ||||

| First off thank you for all the helpful advice : ) I will definetly be applying that to my future of posting now that I no better. And in regards to the big three I have not heard of ghost in a shell yet but I will definetly have to add that to my anime list that I still have to watch. And true there can be many other animes listed in the big three type scenario. I just listed the ones that first came to mind and were ones I remember from my childhood. | ||||

Yes, I'm aware. Made that a little unclear, the Ghost in the Shell movie seemed to be pretty main stream so that might have been able to make a list of "Big 3" anime titles when it was first released by people (like me back then) who didn't really watch anime and only new the big titles you'd see on TV. The entire series (including movies) could be in the running for the "Big 3" out of people who actually watch anime and know of anime that might not be big enough for the average person to know about (like a dragon ball or pokemon). Basically I would call it an Anime Classic that ranks up high on the list of "Must Watch Anime" Of course my opinion might be a little biased because I love the show/movies. |
