That's probably my biggest problem with Evangelion, the characters are sympathetic less because they stop being obnoxious, and more that you feel sorry for them because their surrounded by bigger jerks

It's possible to both sympathize with a character and recognize that they're not a particularly good person. I think that was the point of a lot of characters in Evangelion.

I've always forgiven Shinji and Asuka because they have good reasons for being messed up. Most people focus too much on how Shinji is whiny without considering the valid reason behind his behaviour. And Asuka didn't exactly have a normal childhood either. Rei is a bit different; the reason why she is so impassive is arguably well-constructed, but I just don't like her. I have tried to figure out the underlying cause of my antipathy towards her, but I don't think there is a simple explanation.

alright I got chance to hear the podcast. I like the talk with Evan Miller about being a tour guide in Japan for foreigner. Very nice perspective on that. I'll keep that in mind when I go to Japan someday Very Happy .

I'm not familiar with Anime3000. But I'll give it a shot by going to that site but I do have ANN, myanimelist, Japanator, Kotaku, and other site to get me my anime info, and what's going on in Japan.

About the niche thing, yeah it's sad and I do support niche fandom like OEL manga, and I do recall anime used to be a niche fandom back then although the fandom and recent co-productions like Batman: Gotham Knight, Halo Legends, and the upcoming anime Co-production (Iron Man anime, Wolverine Anime, and Supernatural anime) has made the anime got out of the niche/small market area. But many genres in anime are still in the niche section. I hope maybe one day anime genres like Yuri, and other could break out of the niche and into maybe mainstream 1 day. Very Happy

About anime exposure on TV. I somewhat agree with V about anime exposure on TV has helped created a new legion of anime fan. Without anime on TV, I wouldn't have became a anime fan and typing this message on ANN today. I also agree with Zac that time have changes and anime viewing has gone digital. I'm glad to see that because anime get edited for TV broadcast. However, a lot of people who watch Naruto, Bleach, Dragonball Z Kai and anime that are shown on TV are not aware of other anime like Shikabane Hime, Strike Witches, Claymore, Shakugan No Shana and things like that. I do have a classmate/friends at my college who watch Dragonball Z, and Gundam Wings. He even built Gundam set and here's the shocking part, he wasn't aware there are other anime out there beside the one shown on TV. He didn't even know about the other Gundam series (00, SEED, the UC Gundam series). So I do agree that anime on TV help give other people a chance to see other anime. Would I want to see anime back on TV? Yes!! Would I want to see other channel broadcasting anime beside Adult Swim and SyFy Channel and ImaginASIAN? YES, I would love to see that!!! I would love to see:

Spike TV: they broadcasted Afro Samurai. Why can't they broadcast other anime. They could broadcast Black Lagoon, Shikabane Hime/Corpse Princess, Claymore, Basilisk, Air Gear. Spike TV will not censor a lot in anime and they have no problem showing anime with TV-MA rating.

Lifetime: This channel should broadcast Shojo anime and anime aim at girls like Fruit Baskets, Peach Girl, Kodacha, Paradise Kiss, and maybe Rumbling Hearts

TeenNick: I think there are anime that could satisfy the TeenNick TV standard. I would recommend Bambloo Blade, Suzuka, Rumbling Hearts, and Haruhi Suzumiya.

MTV: In other countries like Italy, and Russia, MTV broadcast anime. I think MTV in US should do the same. I think Kaze No Stigma, Shakugan No Shana, K-ON!, Kaleido Star, BECK, and maybe a few other anime would work for that channel.

G4TV: Remember G4TV used to do Anime Unleashed. I wish they could bring it back. I think this channel could broadcast some good titles like Devil May cry anime, Sand of Destruction, Seto No Hanayome/My Bride is a mermaid, Negima, Desert Punk, Aquarion, and I think they should broadcast the 2 Evangelion movie (MTV could also broadcast the Evangelion movie if G4TV can't).

PlayboyTV: you want hentai and ecchi anime that border to hentai broadcast on TV. Well PlayboyTV could maybe do that. Why don't we have them broadcast Girls Bravo, Master of Martial Hearts, Queen's Blade, and Sekirei could probably be broadcast on that part. Also I would love hentai to be broadcast from that channel.

I would love to see more channel like I mention to broadcast anime so people can see Dragonball, Bleach, and Naruto are not the only anime out there. There are variety and it's our job as anime fan to guide the new fans to the right path.

Note: I haven't got chance to hear the 2 hour part of the podcast, so I'll probably leave another comment about that later.

I don't think your analogy is quite right. Context isn't solving a puzzle for you, it is merely stating what sort of a puzzle it is.

Context is fine. I have no problem with context. I completely agree that knowing about the context can help in undrestanding the work or what might have influenced the author, etc. My problem is with the idea that you HAVE to know what Anno said about the work or else you're not watching it correctly (at least, that's how V comes across), that the only way to properly enjoy and understand the work is to have the explanation laid out for you with no mental effort on your own part. That is the puzzlemaker solving the puzzle for you, saying this means "xyz" and only that. You don't have to think for yourself, just let me tell you!

MDO, I'm with you! I don't know if it would bring in the ratings on these channels, but damn near every cable channel has lost its original premise because a pure music or history or women-focused channel doesn't sell. If every channel had some sort of anime on it, an audience is bound to bite, no?

Speaking of trying to make anime work on TV, I wonder why V wanted cartoon network to get their act together on their Adult Swim block. Screw 'em! Why not root for a channel that focuses primarily on anime. I know that when I used to watch cable, there was NO basic cable channel with an anime focus.

I guess things like The Anime Network and the Funimation Channel is the most I can ask for.

I'm glad you don't run a television channel, mdo7 because if you did you would have an average of 200 viewers. You would like to see moe (Shana and Bamboo Blade) on TV, let alone MTV and TeenNick? C'mon now. Beck and Black Lagoon were some valid points though.

The V guy scares the crap out of me. It's one anime out of several thousands that are out there. Although I haven't seen much of Evangelion I know it is no prized anime to uphold in such high regard. It was much too convoluted for my tastes to continue watching.

You act as if moe=pornography. Maybe some of those shows would raise an alarm on Teen Nick, but on MTV it could fit; they're running teen pregnancy shows and whatnot. I think they can handle a little "naughty"

He didn't say anything about 'naughty'. That is not the issue. Moe is still an extremely niche thing at least in North America. If you think something like K-ON has the kind of mainstream appeal to run on TV then you live in a happy fantasy land that does not intersect with reality.

As already mentioned moe does really well with a certain crowd, but those views don't translate into huge sales outside of Haruhi which did pretty well but not huge numbers. I could definitely see Teen Nick trying some anime, but MTV's demographic doesn't match the demographic of anime, Lifetime most definitely doesn't match the demographic of the anime released in America.

LOL ecchi anime on PlayboyTV? Way too much plot and it is only ecchi which is not full nudity or sex in most cases.
Most of the fetishes covered in hentai don't fit the PlayboyTV image.
