are they the same show or something it says robotech is american made and theres a trilogy and what is macross

Robotech was made in the US and is composed of the anime Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada. That would make Macross part of Robotech. It says it in the Plot summary also:
There isn't much more to it than that. I think Robotech was somewhat edited too. |

The plots of the shows were altered so they would all tie together. And yes, some things were cut out of the shows as well.

Robotech and Macross starts off simulare. But as soon Macross Saga is over, there is some BIG DIFFERENCE in the time line.
ROBOTECH TIME LINE MACROSS TIME LINE The over all events are the same until 2013. A classic example is this. MACROSS 2040 - Macross City holds the 30th anniversary celebration of the end of Space War I. "The Sharon Apple Incident." ROBOTECH 2040 - 9 years after the invid invasion, earth is only starting to build a resistance movement to push back the invid. |
