I just think everyone should know that this doesn't have a confirmed airing date yet.
It might indeed be this summer! Let's not go crazy and get all ahead of ourselves here tho k

But, see.
"Remaking" would imply that it had been made already.

Free! is not a shojo or shoujo, though. Its a show aimed at the female otaku.

If the target demographic is female(even if they're otaku), it's shojo

The target audience is females 15-23, which falls mostly under the Shoujo demographic, it is definitely shoujo(demographic, not genre, because shoujo is not a genre)

Just like Sailor Moon was a show made for little girls, and yet a lot of young (and not so young) boys ended up watching it too. Laughing

Oh god it's a show made for woman. Run, run, run and never turn back. Run quickly lest you be infested by the "fujoshi" virus. Man how tired this meme is. Rolling Eyes

Who the F*** cares what the demographic of this show is. It ended up being a good show hence it gets a second season. And if people outside of the projected demographic get to enjoy it so be it. It means the show has a quality that transcends the "ghetto" meme. The you're not a woman hence you won't like this show is getting old.

Am I the only to remember just how much hate Kyonai ended up getting from the otaku male fanbase ? Like it would be the end of the animation industry if those guys ceded to the fujoshi (female otakus) fanbase ? Well done Kyoani, make more Free for everyone to enjoy. Cool

I have to wonder where people are assuming this show is shojo or josei. It seems more in line with shonen or seinen, like KyoAni's previous works. Just because it features bishounen guys does not make it aimed at women. Kuroko no Basket and Hetalia are other examples of shonen/seinen series that are popular with women.

That's the problem with demographic labels as opposed to genre labels. Free! can in no way be considered shounen or seinen since it was unambiguously targeted towards females. (Yes, guys like myself can and did enjoy it but we were not the main audience.) And yet, Free! clearly followed the shounen sports formula. So calling it a shoujo show, whilst technically correct, feels really wrong, because it doesn't resemble most shoujo shows out there.

Tl;dr: Free! is a shoujo show, but calling it that is really stupid, even if technically correct.

Oh dear no, I wasn't saying that.
I was just stating my belief that a quibble over which manga demographic applies to an anime series is a very silly quibble indeed.

It's clearly aimed at females but at the same time it is no way a shoujo or a josei. I think it's a mix of shounen and shoujo.

How about we just take these sexist terms and push them somewhere else?

It's a sports anime.

That's it.

These gender labels have always been really, really dumb.

Exactly. Dividing all anime up into four quarters based on supposed age and gender demographics is ridiculous.
