Only problem is, most of the "quality" US cosplayers either are now pushing themselves as "models" or doing porn.

One asks how one could hold an international cosplay gathering, and NOT invite the region with probably more cosplayers that any other Western country... not that the WCS has any credibility.

Link to the original thread from two years ago, for the curious.

The problem I have is that it's clear that there are serious cultural differences (not only in cosplay, but in a lot of other things anime) between the US and Japan -- and you might see a lot more friction across the Pacific in the near future (look for intellectual property to be a major issue in 2007!), which will impact American anime fans across the board.

It's clear to me that, even had some con put on a qualifier, that the WCS would not want an American team, dis-inviting them after two years ago. Cosplay contest or beauty contest? Doesn't really matter...

Intellectual property? Whatever do you mean?

Kinda the point I'm making...

Really, to a lot of people, cosplaying is little more than jack-off material. I mean, there are times I have to get away from some of them for _their_ safety, because they're just too darn hot to handle.

I mean, heck, for all the Bay Area cons, I do see at least a couple Asian porno queens with a booth at the con...

I don't think that's going to be much of an issue.

The things you listed are illegal copies of the main backbone of the anime industry--DVDs. They have the potential to hurt sales.

Cosplay, on the other hand, is fans showing appreciation for shows they love. There's not even any possibility of them hurting sales by doing it because there's very few official cosplaying merchandise out there (and what little there is, like the Naruto headbands, probably sell well BECAUSE of cosplay). Some companies even use cosplay in their advertising.

I don't think we're going to see any suing because of cosplaying, that'd just be...silly.

This should be a lesson that the same rules do not apply to the US. Only "other" teams are better, even when they aren't.

I guess it shouldn't be a surpise though, the World has always hated us.

Care to explain where you got this view from? As I've traveled outside the US I've found nothing of the eternal hatred you claim has always been aligned against us. I have, however, met countless Americans who claimed to hate Africans, Europeans, or Asians without ever setting foot anywhere near the people they claimed to be so superior to. I'm sure there are plenty of people who truly hate America, and I'm sure we're doing our best to add to their numbers every time we attack a former crony without any verifiable reason, but seriously the bulk of the world's citizens don't actually hate us. They just seem to think we're more ignorant and spoiled than most folks. At the moment we seem to be doing a damn fine job of proving them right. A relative non-event like a Japanese cosplay competition has somehow managed to stir people into delusional accusations against the entire "World" for Pete's sake. But hey, don't let me stop you from feeding the flames of naiveté.

The US most certainly does not play by the same rules as everyone else, but if you think for one moment that the rules of the modern world are somehow stacked against the sole remaining hyperpower, well, good luck explaining that inexplicable logic.

As for me, English conversation does not have confidence.

I want you to understand only two truth.
In Japan, there be animation and the guys who are going to gain with the fashion of a costume play.though they are not interested in animation,In fact.
They are interested in only keyword to say 'a trendy costume play'.and money.
For example,TV Aichi....

Another truth,
such a reason,This event is ignored from an animation fan in Japan.

A sacred place is not There.

First of all, welcome to the forum. Foreign contributors are always welcome regardless of their conversational confidence! Smile

Even though I have no doubt that you speak the truth, this important aspect has already been touched upon during previous threads on this subject. However, some folks apparently just love to wallow in the thought of being eternal underdogs against a repressive and snobby foreign entity. All the logic in the world probably isn't going to convince some folks that this isn't an attack on Americans and our values. It doesn't really matter though; the US has enough active cons with active cosplayers that an annual snub from a no-fatties Japanese event will probably have little if any impact beyond the gossip column. In fact, our fragmented approach to conventions might have as much to do with our former losses as anything else.

Truth be told, I didn't even know about this until I read it here, so it's really not a superhot issue that everyone is talking about.

What happened in '05 is sad and disrespectful. For a competition like this to have that sort of situation is almost laughable. If they want to exclude US participation, fine, let them. It's not like getting banned from the Olympics or something.

What would be a nice ending to the story is if the US team qualified for the WCS with a rag-tag group of players in a rickety old play, did really well, but broke in the middle of a championship play, but they finish up. All to a gradually building applause. And at the next summit they returned, as equals.

Haha, nice "Cool Runnings" reference. The US Cosplay team is like the Jamaican bobsled team. Nobody wants either team at the big event.

Some Major american convention could create a true international cosplay contest, invinting cosplayers around the world to participate. This will show to TV Aichi how to make a serious competition...What you think?

WCS is just a fake televised cosplay contest. Winning WCS means absolutely nothing. The winners have already been pre-chosen. The dis-invitation of the US has absolutely nothing to do with current world events. In 2005, the American cosplayers and the Chinese cosplayers were both treated like dirt. Today American cosplayers can care less about WCS after finding out the true nature of WCS.

WCS is nothing more than just a casting call for a rigged cosplay contest. The only thing you win is just a free trip to Japan. If you want to see true cosplay competitions, your better off by watching Masquerades at WorldCon, Comic Con, Costume Con, and Anime Expo. Forget WCS. It means nothing. It's just a TV special made by a TV station to cash off on cosplay and exploit cosplayers at the same time.
