Kuma shock~!

I never saw this show when it was streaming, and I'm glad it's coming out stateside. I heard it did badly in Japan, for one. Sure hope I can get a job and afford it someday...

going back to the iconic pairing

Outside of anime communities I have never seen anyone know or care about Utena nor referenced/alluded anywhere, so I don't know why the use of "iconic" is used. This is also ignoring that the TV versions are barely a couple if that (in fact I still don't see them as that since, well, they showed nothing), but compared to Lesbian Bear Storm it's coherent.

Well it was the worst anime of its season (I'd say year, but not 100% sure since Gundam IBO aired that same year) so that shouldn't be surprising.

This and Penguindrum were brilliant bright spots in the last few years, and a big reminder of how much poorer anime was in Ikuhara's absence during that decade or so after Utena. Yurikuma's message is particularly strong - I'm sad to hear it didn't do well in Japan, but I think it's a work that will stand for a long time to come. Worth owning.

Outside of anime communities almost all "iconic" anime pairings are not known. I fail to see how saying that about Utena and Anthy really is any sort of eye opener. Of course most people outside of anime won't know about them because anime is a niche product and if they are not fans why would they know about any iconic pairings within? They're considered iconic because they are. spoiler[They are one of the most widely known and earliest example of a homosexual relationship within anime. Their relationship and growth to the when they finally realize their love for each other is one of the best examples of a friendhsip that evolves into a relationship in anime.] I guess since they didn't "show anything" and didn't rush right into having hot yuri sex with T&A everywhere they don't count as a couple huh? Far be it spoiler[to have them actually progress through the series evolving to that point at the end.]

100% agreed. This was my one "I will preorder this the day it goes up on Rightstuf" title from 2015.

It isn't a lack of sex, it is a lack of visual cues in general for the TV version: No kissing, no hugging, no hand holding, no intense eye engagement, no "I love you" moment pronounced from either of them, no dates, no romantic intimacy, even the movie had a few of those. Romance needs something along those lines to make it believable, it's what the genre is. If someone watched and finished it and walked away thinking they were just close platonic friends I wouldn't prove them wrong because I can't prove otherwise.

I have been an anime fan since 2007, before 2012 I didn't know anything about Utena other than it is the rule 63 version of Evangelion or something along those lines, it just seemed like a generic mid-90s series before I saw it. If it's as iconic I'd hear more about it, even today it barely pops up outside of here, Evageeks, and to a lesser degree /a/.

I'm pretty sure I knew about Utena a good 2 years before hearing about Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, or Gundam. I had a lot of high school friends who were into Sailor Moon, and it was extensively marketed as "what to watch next" to them. This was the late 90s, so maybe it is an age gap thing.

You can just stop there and admit you didn't watch the show

It's called evolution. A set of 2 people progressing from friends into something more. I'm sure you're used to today's standards which involve bashing viewers over the head with T&A, innuendos, and blatant romantic overtones. Believe it or not though there are other forms of romance. Some involving people actually more naturally progressing to that stage. What's honestly more believable? Two people thrown together with romance thrown at the viewer from the start or a slower natural progression where the feelings evolve over time through circumstance and the things that the characters go through?

So you're attributing being iconic to popularity then? If it's not popular & everyone isn't talking about it than it's not iconic? Boy I bet Dickens would love to hear that. I would also as a newer fan jumping into anime there are/were probably a lot of titles you didn't know anything about. Just because you hadn't heard of them yet doesn't take away from their accomplishments or status.

That doesn't mean they work as well in a visual medium like animation.

You want a perfectly honest answer from me? Both. Most humans are driven to have sex and spread the gene pool, some have different methods than others to achieve coitus. I've seen romances from the various speed spectrum and real life is no different; some people talk first, some people cut to the chase and talk later, some have an on and off thing going for them. Humans act like humans and do human things in a wide variety of manners, it's the main reason I'll never judge acting beyond line stuttering and keeping in character while the movie is rolling. Making a standard for believability is, well, a tad silly.

If something is never popular, how does it get to iconic status? Confused

H.P. Lovecraft made so little money off his horror stories that he sometimes had to choose between food and stamps (he almost always chose stamps), but today his creation Cthulhu is so iconic that they slap it on Monopoly boxes and coloring books. Something doesn't need to be popular to become iconic.

Utena isn't one of those things, though.

BodaciousSpacePirate beat me to it. I'm just going to stop wasting my time at this point. You have consistently over time shown a habit of narrow views and automatically disregarding other people's views when they don't line up with your own preconceived opinions. Seen it many times before so I'm just going to walk away instead of talking to a brick wall further. I've made my points as have others.

Okay. Now you wanna hear the funniest part? They actually did show that. If you saw the show (which given by your lame response you totally didn't), I would advise you to do this thing called "pay close attention to detail."
