When i saw Sunrise and Production I.G's names on it, i clicked without a second thought. Really disappointed its just about a chinnese game ad. I was hoping it would be "two Badass Studio Teaming up to produce Badass project" kind of news.

Surprised how much Azur Line became popular even after the ripoff controversy with KanKolle. You think Japan would fight trademark infringement as they are openly vocal in fighting anime and manga piracy.

Azur Lane is a Chinese copy of KanColle but is a more echii copy. Characters with more skin showing, more sexy clothes.

That means a all new world to make doujinshi and cosplay, and that means large exposure at the otaku market.

Azur Lane was #7 at last Comiket 94 in terms of Doujin Circles, very close to Love Live circles numbers.
And at the Comiket cosplay event was one of the most popular among cosplayers, because of the sexy costumes.

Well, besides knowing their demography, there are 2 big reasons as to why it's gotten so popular since its launch. 1.: Compared to the KanColle devs they don't just sit on top of their pile of money and actually freakin' care about their game~ Pretty much constant updates and new stuff up 'til now. 2.: It's actually a good game and not just a waifu collection simulator. The bullet hell stuff is fun, there's depth to its team building, and it's pretty damn generous towards f2p players. Honestly, you can't even really call it a Gacha Game because "pulls" are done with in-game ressources you gain by simply playing the game.. or, you know, you just directly get new girls by finishing maps, including the highest rarity. The only thing you'd have to pay for are extensions to your shipyard and optional skins for characters - that's it.

Coincidentally, the OBT of the english version is starting tomorrow, if anyone's interested. Yep, an official english server - how does that feel, KanColle Fans?~ Razz (Just to make sure - I don't hate the players, I just hate the devs, lol.)

I'm disappointed that Girls' Front Line / GFL seems to have been a mega flop in Japan judging by the dearth of pretty much anything from that game coming out of Japan. It actually has some fun game mechanics unlike Azur Lane which is pretty much a direct clone of KC.

First off, I am happy this game is getting an animated Commerical, as Kancolle's full anime was pretty poor. (Movie was far better). I do like to have fun with history, so maybe a full anime is in the works someday?

Anyways, A Shmup is is of course going to play different than a long term base management game. The things paid for are the same, expansion slots in both games. And they're optional, both games are free. Though both games do update constantly. Its hard to find a season go by where the older game, Kancolle, isn't adding a new mechanic. Do keep in mind the base game of Kancolle also was made before this was the hottest sub-genre. "Let's do that popular thing, but add a Shoot-em-up" might feel super advanced, but if Kancolle added a tedious mini-game I'd drop it. I play Kancolle for a few minutes a day when I wake up and come home from work. Then all my hard work pays off when I play more during the Events.

But yeah, while one is a more modern clone, both are different games, both are pretty much f2p and the most vital thing to buy are port expansions if you do buy. The MAJOR breakdown is do you want to play the same Shmup for years? Managing your resources/base and having a hands off battle system is probably why Kancolle is still around. Kancolle has been around since 2013. Azur Lane since 2017. If another game gains traction and has an RPG battle system, do the games with other mechanics just vanish? I have no time to play KC+Shmup, and I doubt the longevity of the game.

As to how Kancolle fans feel? Once the servers are back all the World 1 maps are reworked and we'll be into the first update of Phase 2, with the seasonal event starting by month's end. But since the game isn't supported or updated I dunno.

Now don't get me wrong, Kancolle has a bajillion problems, partially due to the constant updates. The game updates 1-3 times a month. Speaking of 1-3. Stage 1-3 is terrible. A lot of the early map RNG is perhaps the worst thing in the game. So it seems they're taking that out of the earlier maps. The Original game in 2013 had no idea it'd be The Next Big Thing, though it is annoying it took them this long to address it. I doubt the battles will move to full participation, as If there had to be two Shmup shipgirl games, AZ would win. But one is a long term resource management focus to prepare for the big Seasonal events. The other requires frequent Shmup gameplay.

Horrible Analogy! Best I recall Digimon wasn't about capturing monsters but fighting monsters that was part of a evil army. Azur Lane, from what I seen is anthropomorphized warships as girls that ski fighting on the water against aliens. Exactly like Kancolle. As someone mentioned, the only difference is girls with skimpier clothing.

Let me use a Star Wars analogy to give you a better perspective: Is this how Japanese Art dies . . . with thunderous applause?

I'm just gonna guess that is has something to do with firearms being banned in Japan. Or just not preferring guns in general in anime media. I mean, you do see more swords than guns generally. I can't think of many anime where people use guns compared to swords/melee weapons.

Going around collecting monsters and fighting other monsters can easily be applied to both digimon and pokemon. The 2 are highly associated for a reason.

Though a better comparison might be comparing Fortnite to PUBG.

Or Star Trek === Star Wars spoiler[lol jk]
