From "The One I Love Is My Little Sister But She's Not a Little Sister" to "My Sister, My Writer", there was also "Seishun Buta Yarou" ending up as "Rascal".
What's up with this. |

That's the reason why i use the romanization of Japanese titles. Sometimes the English titles come out as absurd or change so much that make no sense. Isekai Maou to Shoukan Shoujo Dorei Majutstu literal translation is The Other World Demon Lord and the Summoning Girl's Slave Magic but the American licensor called it How Not to Summon a Demon Lord So i avoid using American names and use the real Japanese name. Now, i really want to know who will stream this anime. Well, there are still some day before the 10. |

Oreimo kinda got ruined when it got super popular and the author was forced to change the ending where the siblings where supposed to get together. In the current climate however, the most popular TV show got siblings having 4 children together and ruling a country, while the northern barbarians complaining about the winter have a king that bangs his dragon queen aunt. So, unlike when Oreimo launched, this stuff won't even raise an eyebrown anymore even if it happens.

Those seem like efforts to make a title that actually makes sense in English and work better as titles rather than just mindlessly literally translating them. The literal translation is confusing beyond the fact that this is an imouto moe type show, while "My Sister, My Writer" is both more concise and tells more about the premise of the show. It's not quite as forward about the (quasi) incest aspect - possibly a feature not a bug in their view - but I think if you've seen enough anime in recent years, you know it just from sister being in the title of the show. The literal translation of Demon Lord seems a bit awkward and they probably do want to downplay the whole slavery aspect - which may be appropriate as I've heard it doesn't play as big a part in the story as the title would suggest . Personally, How Not to Summon a Demon Lord sounds better as a title in English. I'm not sure about Rascal, though I'm not sure how you would translate Buta Yarou anyways (Note: I'm familiar with the literal translations of individual pieces. I'm just interested in what one feels would be a better translation of the combination). Though, I'll probably just end up using the Japanese abbreviation, ImoImo, for the sake of both brevity and consistency, having used the abbreviations for other such anime, like Oreimo, Imocho, and OniAi.
I do think the makers of Oreimo ended up with the worst of both worlds by leaning into the incest aspect, alienating those who didn't care for the incest elements - which had not been obtrusive in the series proper - , and then pulling back at the end, alienating those that did like the incest part, and otherwise made the ending seem half-baked. However, I'm not sure the popularity of Game of Thrones means that something that has actual blood related siblings will be any better received, having seen both a number of such anime in recent years and the reactions. Yeah, Game of Thrones has a set of siblings that have kids and rule a country, but it is clearly seen within the show as an abomination and a secret that had to be kept, and those siblings had often played the role of the villain, particularly the sister. Plus spoiler[ the children that were alive at the start of the series are all dead, one was a pretty awful king and person, and the other son that ruled was a good person, but ultimately a pawn to others' machinations]. Not exactly a positive portrayal of incest. Looking at more recent such anime like Eromanga Sensei and ImoSae, there seemed to be plenty of eyebrows (and hackles) raised, so I'm not sure that this will be any different, beyond folks moving on quicker, aside from those youtubers and their followers who seem committed to shitting on genres they don't like week after week. |
