I've fallen in love with this series. I think ADV really went out of their way on this release as it's overloaded with content (and the whole production just oozes quality). Not only that but the kudos to the voice actors/actresses for their singing roles, as most of the songs are very catchy. This whole show would have flopped with a poor dub, but every aspect to me is quite impressive. I almost don't want to watch the Japanese version due to the catchy nature of the English songs (I've been singing some at work). One of my favorite lines is in episode 3, "There's plenty of room downstairs and upstairs a place for you to rest." It's one of those shows where you're guaranteed to miss a few things on the first viewing. Luckily the series is only 12 episodes so that will probably save it from the possibility of the material getting old. I think the main reason why I'm attracted to this show though is because of how refreshing it is. It's nice to see something break the mold and try a new angle. Leave it up to Shinichi Watanabe to take the road less travelled. I just hope this show sells well (it's a 50/50 shot as far as I can tell). If it is successful ya think the leads will do small concerts at cons?

I'm not really fond of sexual humor so I'm probably going to skip this release...
That being said, I WISH I wasn't..  The idea of a musical comedy anime tickles my funny bone. I might go ahead and give this disc a rent to see if I can handle it (although I know I'll probably end up not liking it. Sigh.)
I would totally go to a concert if they did that, though.

I agree. It halts the momentum of the rest of the series.
If you've actually had some kimchee, you might appreciate the scene more.

I agree that this series is a bit vulgar for my taste. I found the political statements rather biting (especially the Korean episode) and at odds with the shows lighter side. I suppose the biggest problem with this series was that I was expecting something similar to Excel Saga.
The way that Daikon and Excel vary the most is that where an every episode of Excel was unique, Daikon feels redundant. I love how some episodes of Excel were relatively serious (there are a few near the end that are heartbreaking) compared to others. Daikon felt to formulatic to the point that the characters run to Nabeshin for help and sing a variant of the theme song at the end of every episode. I agree that this is one series that would be hard to marathon. The main source for my disappointment is the main characters. Excel and Hyatt really caught my attention from the first episode. There personalities complemented each other so well. I'm not sure why, but I couldn't really relate with the Daikon brothers. I'll give the series a second chance since I preordered the second DVD (well before the first DVDs release) and will watch it when it arrives. |

Randall: I thought the Korean episode was hilarious, and wasn't really meant to be xenophobic or offensive. (At least compared to other Japanese media.) Otherwise, the Japanese housewives wouldn't be trashed, either. Excel Saga, while leagues above FLCL, was still annoying, precisely because of the serious episodes which killed the tone of the show. Excel's just a pathetic character who's too co-dependant on IlPalazzo, and not very funny when she's trying to crack rapid-fire jokes, either. I actually thought the Daikon Bros. were more down-to-earth than Excel and Hyatt, because their schemes were within the realm of possibility instead of stuff I'd see on Pinky and the Brain. (Don't get me wrong. I like the latter show, but if Pinky was given 30 minutes to talk about his scatter-brained thoughts and ideas, while The Brain just sent him through trap doors, I probably would get bored fast.)

I really want to see this series, but at the moment it's w-a-a-a-y back there on my to-buy list. The musical concept sounds really fun, and it'll be fun to (eventually) hear Brett Weaver take on Nabeshin again. Actually, there was an unscheduled showing of the first few episodes at Anime USA following the scheduled Beck premiere. Since the latter never interested me, I didn't go, and missed out on what would've been an interesting experience. *kicks himself*

NDB is probably one of my favourite comedies now, even just after the first disc. It's so light and funny that I can't help but be addicted to it. Not to mention, the English actors are also great singers, apparently. I'm thinking seriously of just ripping all of the English musical scenes and putting the music on a CD. If not all of them, at least the English ver. opener and closer. Those are great.

I find beauty in it's episodic nature. But I guess that's because I expected it from the start. I find myself curious as to what the wacky situation's gonna be, followed by what tool is going to be used to save the day. Sure, it is redundant but I think that it works in this case. Besides with the series being only 12 episodes long I can't imagine it'll get that old. But to each their own. I find your comment about Excel Saga very interesting. I thought that even the designated "serious" episode was hilarious simply because it was so anti-Excel and they still nailed all the staples of anime drama scenes. Maybe my friends and I are in the minority on that one. |

so far i find this show funny, but did anyone else find the 2nd episode a tad racist? with the whole "Korean Wave Pachinko" thing.

If the episode was racist, they wouldn't have pachinko host clubs of different nationalities in the same episode. The people being trashed are the Japanese women who waste their money, just to ogle cute guys.

I didn't know that the series is only going to be 3 volumes. I guess I'll just have to order the third disc too. My favorite episodes of Excel are the ones that take place between the Gundam parody and the Fist of the North Star episode. The episodic nature of the show was replaced by a more serialized structure. I found Excel's faith and denial in Illpalazzo so sad for some reason. I also love the Ropponmatsus and how they along with the guys form a sentai styled team.
I'm impressed with ADVs job in releasing this title, and love all the effort that goes into their vid-notes. It looks like 2007 will be much better for ADV compared to their relatively dry 2006. So far I like Daikon Brothers at least as much as This Ugly Yet Beautiful World and almost as much as Jinki Extend. This year's Utawarerumono is really awesome (at least the first DVD) and has a really neat cover and liner notes. |
