Nice review but the first paragraph already killed me. It's like they are recycling Gohan's arc from the Resurrection F arc where he gets nearly killed by Frieza which forces him the idea of training again to avoid depending on others. I thought the Great Saiyaman would appear but at least I think Gohan looks better on the Majunia gi than Goku's in terms of originality.

When I read interviews from the director and Toriyama, it seems they were tired of the old formula of bringing a big overpowered bad guy like they did with Broly last time which resulted into a neverending fight like the one from Revenge of the Sith. I guess this movie is more divided on different parts. The poster does look good but some scenes do look a bit like video games.

The film is absolutely filled with dynamic shots—especially during fight scenes—that, while possible with traditional animation, would be prohibitively expensive.

Oh boy, a common misconception that's been debunked by industry people numerous times in a review for a large website that is all about anime. Contrary to popular belief CGI is actually more expensive than traditional animation. And considering how badly 2D animators are paid it shouldn't be that surprising.

Yeah I don't know where this misconception comes from. This is come from a person who has worked in various 3D programs. Yeah for characters you only need to have one model and unlike traditional animation you don't have to keep drawing them ad nauseum. However, there are other complications to consider when doing CG. The fact that it is simply in three dimension means you have worry about lighting, weight, textures, camera, etc. It actually far more work than most people would even consider.

So it might be cheaper in some situations like vehicles or crowd shots as you see in most anime nowadays. Overall though it is cheaper and it is not easier. The equipment alone is expensive enough along with the software which is not cheap I'll tell you that much. I'm sure the author means well and there are probably some things I haven't considered but I am just speaking from personal experience.

many people speculated the presence of a certain someone could have been a major factor for the decision to make this CGI,due to their design being easier to draw and animate in 3D

So I'm just gonna assume that the "unearned" transformation was for Gohan then?

And if the final boss is bad, that also means that it wasn't Cell like everyone was hoping it would be.

Was the movie even worth seeing at all? Already sounds like the weakest of the Super movies so far.

Why is this not spoiler tagged?

Honestly, I'm legit annoyed after what happened with DBS: Broly. I get that Toei is Toei but c'mon, really annoying that DRAGON BALL of all things can't get a legit simultaneous international release and so naturally the whole damn movie is gonna get spoiled months before I have a chance to see it.

As far as the movie itself, based on the plot descriptions it sounds like I'm gonna have a great time with this one. Especially looking forward to Piccolo being the star of the show.

Lastly, the film falls into the ever-looming pitfall of adding even more transformations into the series. While a new transformation for Piccolo makes sense (it's been a long time since he had anything like one), the other new transformation seen in the film feels completely unearned.

Can't have new media without new toys to push. It's actually silly how many different versions of "Base Goku" are out there.

I agree, and I've removed the sentence.

Considering how Gohan has been treated by the author ever since the Saiyan arc, this might be his best thing. I mean ever since his introduction, the character faced quite a complex arc for such a young kid while Goku was always late to save the day with a simple style in comparison. Toriyama even admitted he wanted Gohan to be the new lead in the Buu arc but ended up changing it really fast. Even the last transformation Gohan got was kinda the laziest thing ever. He just got his eyes redrawn and his hair stylish. Even the Battle of the Gods staff forgot "Ultimate" existed leading to revision of trailers but not the poster. Whatever is his new transformation, I haven't heard of its name or anything but it looks like the whole spoiler[Ultra Instinct Goku used in the Tournament of Power out of nowhere]

I'm happy Piccolo is centered stage in this movie & I was even more happy on what had happened to him.

Yeah, that has been pretty frustrating. It's a pattern that happened multiple times with Gohan at this point. I get that he has other priorities compared to Goku and Vegeta, but I'm not sure how many times he can let his skills atrophy knowing full-well Goku isn't even on the planet before he gets it.

spoiler[I did get a good laugh when Beerus got a crush on Cheelai...I think that's her name. Whis said he has a type: young, short, cute, and big bosomed. ] I just got back from it. I did enjoy the contrast between the Gammas. Yet I'm new to the series as a whole, so I don't have the room to judge. I quite enjoyed it...yet Bulma seems to...be more eye candy than anything else.

I saw the movie today and rather enjoyed it. Some of the CG shots/renders looked better than others and the final battle felt a little padded, but otherwise it's a fun movie and probably among my favorites in the DB franchise. My favorite part was Piccolo working behind the scenes, investigating Red Ribbon, using the Dragon Balls, pretending to kidnap/threaten Pan, and such. And the dub's voice acting was good, especially from Kyle Hebert, Chris Sabat, and Monica Rial.

If you watch this in 4DX just know it’s surprisingly intense and nonstop. I would at least definitely recommend not having popcorn during the movie unless you wanna struggle to hold on to it Laughing
