As you mention, there are a lot of wacky baseball anime in Japan. I'm a particular fan of Gatarō Man's Battlefield Baseball manga, which serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. It might not be well-known overseas, but it is an absurd gag manga where everyone dies playing baseball. It's so absurd, in fact, that I ended up not referencing it for Tribe Nine at all.

I was wondering if Kodaka had any influence behind this show's concept, as he was born in 1978, after Team Astro had ended in Shonen Jump in 1976, so it's nice to see Battlefield Baseball brought up. Either Kodaka got confused or the translation is a little off, though, as Battlefield Baseball ran in Monthly Jump, not Weekly Jump; honestly, either one is plausible.
