You'd think the environmentally friendly thing to do in Japan would be having domiciles that are meant to last more than 25 years. I just don't understand that practice, just build a good house that doesn't need to be replaced, but I guess owners always want new homes, which is funny when buying aged and classic homes in America and Canada is valued. I guess there's just no appreciation in value for the actual structure.

Japanese homes are notorious for lack of insulation; ergo the kotatsu being the central piece of home life.

They also tend to throw out not-too-old, perfectly-good-working appliances just because the next shiny new version comes out. (S'why J-homes almost seemingly have all the latest appliances.) You could literally stock your house by picking up these thrown-away appliances and never have to pay for appliances ever again. Smile
(Unfortunately, those ended up over-filling their landfills instead, so incinerators become the most used destination.)

More and more I'm reminded of that chapter from "Even a Monkey Can Draw Manga" about how you can make an anime/manga for anything (funeral home, train schedule, etc...)

Japan has Belle-Chan for insulation. What do we have? The Pink Panther.
