Oh my God, YES!!! I SO want to donate to the cause, and considering how popular the show is in the Anglosphere, I don't think they'll have much trouble raking in the cash.

I'm psyched for this. It's a shame the interview wasn't exactly peachy.

I never got around to this show...and knowing it was Maaya Sakamoto's debut always made me want to hear it...so

Quote:

"if we do not hit the goal of $150k dollars on this Kickstarter to be able to actually create this new dub, then we're just going to be releasing the new HD material, so the new stuff based on the Japanese Bluray, subtitled only. "
- So now I have no motivation to give money to this lol

And this

Quote:

"Jennifer: Unfortunately a lot of the cost of things like dubbing related or putting things out on Bluray or things like that, a lot of those are locked down via contract, so there's really no way for us to reveal this. "

I understanding the reasoning and legal issues with that, but IMO with Kickstarter, it should be required to reveal that information. Just my opinion of course. I just feel that we the donators should be allowed to see where their money is going, 100%. Given legal issues, I think laws should be changed to adapt to crowd-funding. Transparency in crowd-funding should be a requirement.

All that said, I'll admit I'm gonna blue about the whole Kickstarter thing. With the way things are going for Under The Dog, the massive delay on the physical Clannad package (October 2015 was original date....delay announcement was extremely late...and then they said "Early 2016" and the year is almost a fourth over, which is hardly "early" to me) and other projects failing after greatly surpassing goals...I guess just a pile of bad experiences lol.

I don't agree with Kickstarter. But if this means they'll actually start doing stuff wit their other Bandai titles (namely Crest/Banner of the Stars, Code Geass, Tales of the Abyss) then I'll be on the lookout.

I still have the Bandai Anime Legends set so I won't be donating to this. At this point the original dub is so nostalgic I don't think I could accept a new one anyways.

I've gotta agree with the concerns Zac raised. It's one thing for some small time company to take to Kickstarter to get an obscure old anime released, but for Funimation to do this with an A-list title ... that's completely not what Kickstarter is for. It feels like ever since the Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter is turning into a way for companies to underwrite risky investments rather than an actual fundraising platform for things that wouldn't get done otherwise.

I really never thought the Escaflowne English dub was that bad. I mean, it wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible. Kirby Morrow, Brian Drummond, Paul Dobson, Andrew Francis, all generally did a decent job. I was never choked up over Kelly Sheridan, but overall, tolerable at the least, leaning towards solid. It was just the Fox Kids edit that butchered it.

I get it, though, if there are extended versions of the episodes, needing to dub new material, but you could probably get those Ocean VAs again, like they got Ocean to do the Black Lagoon OVA. But it's fine, I guess, if they want a completely new dub. It just isn't one of those desperately-in-need-of-recasting anime.

Still way better than the Evangelion dub that ADV did. Or most of Funimation's efforts at the time.

Ocean are so inconsistent, so it would be foolish to use them. Their in house cast is way better. Besides, Dilandau's VA is not a kid anymore, so it would sound awkward. Not that the voice was good in the first place, but whatever.

So the standard edition is a Bluray/DVD combo pack. The DVD version in the standard edition will match the new dub and the HD materials just because we know there are still some people who prefer DVD to Bluray, that's something we've always done with the combo pack. With this collector's edition, what we're planning on doing is having the Bluray only, so the Bluray of the new dub and the new Japanese materials, and the original dub will be available on DVD discs that are in that release.

edit: misread due to it being worded poorly. So there's NO Bluray-only version at all? We're being forced to buying outdated DVD instead? This just punishes people who got rid of outdated technology. I hardly know anyone that owns a DVD player anymore (standalone...bluray are backwards compat). People buy bluray because they want the bluray. Combo packs are a scam. I'd honestly support this despite my dislike for dubs, if they would offer a bluray only version.

A few notes for all the people who inevitably skip the video on the Kickstarter:

According to Funimation, the original dub does not match up with the HD materials. So they either have to record a new dub, OR they have to make cuts to the HD materials for the dubbed version.

So they're not saying the original dub is bad, and they're not having to gauge interest in Escaflowne. They're trying to figure out what the fans who actually spend money actually want.

Makes sense to me.

It's good that a new dub is being considered, since the original one wasn't very good. However...I am sorry to be so blunt, but this is simply Funimation wanting to have their cake and eat it.

Escaflowne would sell pretty damn well under almost any plausible scenario. Sure, there are some folks who think the show can get too ridiculous at times and a number of people hate the ending in particular, but that's not the big picture. Like it or not, this is one of the more popular older titles from the old Bandai catalog.

Regular sales would be more than enough to cover the costs of a new dub. As a rule, I believe Kickstarters shouldn't be used for glorified pre-orders from major companies that have little or no inherent risk.

Well as a sub person, I don't really care either way since I'll never watch it dub wether its made or not. Best of luck to them, personally I don't have any problem with using kickstarter as a form of pre order.

What was cut out of the original us version? I only watched the french version and I'm wondering if that was edited too.

Really interested in seeing how this goes, as a dub girl I only need to hear the word "dub" and I'm sold. Though this being the largest anime company in NA doing it is interesting. My biggest want for the future if Kickstarter is a thing is to use it to gauge interest for animes that are niche or too risky to dub.I know I speak for myself and probably others feel this way but as a lover of SoL and many niche shows that are rarely ever dubbed I'd love for the chance to at least try and show that there's a market for dubs with those niche shows. I understand it though, licensing everything and dubbing everything is part of the cause for the the collapse in the late 2000's and there needs to be an audience but I feel like things have gotten a bit too safe at times what what does/doesn't get dubbed and there will never be a market to support dubs for niche shows if said shows are never getting dubbed and fans allowed to show support. Long story short if this is going to be a thing in the future for some shows to get dubs I'm all far it. I put my money where my mouth is, if it costs me an extra $50 to watch in anime with an audio track I prefer I'll gladly pay. If the Kickstarter fails then said anime would just release sub only and I can live with that I tried to help.

I want to think that there is "enough interest" (Funimation sounds stupid and disingenuous for suggesting that somehow Escaflowne is not a popular title) to produce this new dub.

I hope that things work out because it might be a big mess if Funimation ends up releasing Escaflowne sub only. As a marginal Escaflowne fan, I would take a bare bones release, but I want a dub.

And I appreciate that Zac asked them about why they are asking this money when it is obvious that Funimation has the resources needed to handle this release without needing our assistance.

Please how much disingenuous can you be. Funimation can of course do a new dub only for those parts that are different from the standard old dub. That's going to cost way way less than doing a new dub from scratch. So basically use old dub + "new dub" over the parts that warrant them. After all I seriously question wether the HD material and story is so completely different from the old one you would need to throw away the old dub. Funimation is taking all of us for a ride.
