Hollywood Reporter: Actor approached for Hiroshi Sakurazaka's science-fiction story

The Hollywood Reporter trade magazine noted in its analysis of actor Tom Cruise's influence that Warner Bros. Pictures studio "is again talking to the actor for the lead" in a film adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka's Japanese text novel All You Need Is Kill. According to the magazine, the "big-budget sci-fi war" film is also known as We Mortals Are. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Go) confirmed last year that he is attached to the proposed film.

All You Need Is Kill revolves around a battle-armored soldier who finds himself dying and re-incarnating over and over again during an alien invasion. Viz Media published Sakurazaka's novel in English to launch its Haikasoru imprint for Japanese science fiction and fantasy in 2009.

Warner Brothers paid a low seven-figure price for an All You Need Is Kill film screenplay by Dante Harper last spring. New York magazine's Vulture blog reported last month that Warner offered actor Brad Pitt (Moneyball, Inglourious Basterds, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, 12 Monkeys) the lead role in the proposed film also.
